G.L. Pease Union Square Pipe Tobacco

G.L. Pease Union Square Pipe Tobacco

G.L. Pease Union Square is a 100% Virginia flake blended from high grade flue cured leaf ranging from sweet, ascerbic golden brights to toasty, zesty reds, pressed into cake and sliced without any added sugars, toppings, or flavorings. It was first released in June 2009 as the first pure Virginia tobacco developed by G.L. Pease, and it remains one of the most celebrated straight Virginia flakes on the market. Greg Pease’s official tin description says it plainly: “A blended, sliced cake of high grade flue cured leaf, from beautiful, sweet brights to deep, earthy reds, without the added sugars and flavourings common to many Virginia flakes. It’s rich on the palate, evolving in layers with the clean, natural sweetness of pure tobaccos. It offers a pleasant room note, and a delightful finish. For those seeking the pure Virginia experience, we proudly present Union Square.” The Pipes Magazine review captured the experience best: “Amazing Virginia blend. Great crossover for aromatic smokers. I almost don’t believe this isn’t an aromatic. (I mean that in a good way.)” That reaction, from a reviewer stunned that a tobacco with zero toppings could smell and taste this good, tells you everything about what Union Square does. Part of the Fog City Selection.

• 100% Virginia tobacco, no added sugars, no toppings, no artificial flavorings. Every bit of sweetness and complexity comes from the natural characteristics of the flue cured leaf.
• Bright Virginias provide the foundational sweetness: natural sugarcane, honey, and tangy citrus that Virginia tobacco is famous for.
• Red Virginias add depth, earthiness, toastiness, and a dark fruity complexity (figs, raisins, stewed fruit) that prevents the blend from becoming one dimensional.
• Pressed and sliced cake (flake) format enhances flavor integration by marrying the bright and red Virginias together under pressure, creating a slow, cool burn and consistent flavor.
• First 100% Virginia blend developed by G.L. Pease, released June 2009 as part of the Fog City Selection, the San Francisco inspired collection.
• Medium strength (3 out of 5), accessible to a wide range of pipe smokers while delivering the full, complex flavor that Virginia enthusiasts demand.
• Pleasant room note (3 out of 5) that multiple reviewers praise, with an aroma of apricots, prunes, raisins, and baked bread that fills the room without offending.
• Ages beautifully. Virginia flakes reward cellaring, and Union Square’s pressed format is ideal for long term storage. The sugars in the Virginia leaf deepen and the tangy, fruity notes become richer and more complex over time.

The pure Virginia experience

Most commercial Virginia flakes use added sugars, casings, or toppings to boost sweetness and mask imperfections in the leaf. Union Square uses none of that. The sweetness you taste is the natural sugar content of flue cured Virginia tobacco, which contains a higher concentration of sugars than any other tobacco varietal. Greg Pease selected specific grades and cures of Virginia leaf and pressed them together to create a blend where the bright leaf’s tangy sweetness and the red leaf’s earthy depth interact and evolve throughout the bowl. The result is a tobacco that tastes “almost aromatic” to some smokers (the Pipes Magazine reviewer’s exact reaction) while containing zero artificial enhancement.

One TobaccoReviews reviewer described the experience as “smooth but full bodied, alternating between a moderate natural fruity sweetness, a pleasant grassy astringency, and a very organic feel. It doesn’t taste over processed or too restrained: you can clearly always feel you are burning some vegetal stuff, but in a good way. It does NOT taste green, edgy or sour, at all. Very consistent from start to finish, and rather complex too. And of course no bite at all.” That final point is critical. Union Square does not bite. Virginia tobaccos have a reputation for tongue bite among inexperienced smokers, but the pressing process and Greg Pease’s selection of mature, well processed leaf eliminate that problem entirely.

Smoking experience

The flakes are evenly sliced and rub out easily into a ribbon, or they can be folded and stuffed whole for a slower, more concentrated burn. The tin note is immediately striking: raisins, bread, apricots, prunes, hay, and a fermented sweetness that one reviewer said smelled like “raisins and bread” and another called “earthy, tangy, spicy, fermented, and semi sweet.” The moisture level out of the tin is good, though letting rubbed out flakes sit for 15 to 20 minutes before loading improves the burn.

The opening puffs deliver dark, sweet, wonderful fruit flavors right from the char light. Figs, raisins, and a tangy sweetness coat the palate, and the impression is immediately rich and full. One reviewer wrote: “Right off the char light you get those dark sweet wonderful fruit flavors, the figs and raisins. Really nice.” The bright Virginias’ natural sugar content drives the early sweetness, and it reads as clean and authentic rather than candy like or artificial. A toasty quality emerges quickly alongside the fruit, and the smoke feels warm, smooth, and full bodied on the tongue.

As the bowl progresses, the red Virginias assert themselves. Bready and hay notes push into the profile, and a pleasant grassy astringency develops that balances the sweetness. Brown sugar, caramel, and a vinegar tang appear, with one Reddit reviewer describing the interplay as “vinegar and maple syrup, brown sugar, caramel, stewed dark jammy fruits” that creates “a sort of balsamic vinegar effect.” The earthy, toasty character of the reds deepens, and the blend becomes richer and more complex without losing the fruity sweetness that defined the opening. The smoke remains cool and bite free. The body reads medium to full, the strength holds at medium, and the flavor intensity climbs as the Virginia sugars concentrate.

The final portion is where Union Square rewards patience. The stewed fruit, bread, and earth converge into a warm, deeply satisfying finish that one Brothers of Briar reviewer called “wholesome, natural, clean and intriguingly subtle flavor, with a hint of the earth it grew in. I thought I knew what Virginia tobacco was before.” The natural sweetness persists to the bottom of the bowl without turning bitter or harsh, and the aftertaste is a lingering warmth of caramel, hay, and dried fruit. The room note throughout is pleasant and inviting, carrying a natural tobacco sweetness into the surrounding air that non smokers tolerate well.

Greg Pease and G.L. Pease

Greg Pease started blending pipe tobacco during his college years at Drucquer & Sons in Berkeley, California. He spent so much time at the shop that the owner finally told him he spent too much time there for someone who wasn’t working and put him to tasks: restoring pipes, blending house tobaccos, tinning, labeling. That apprenticeship gave Pease a foundational understanding of tobacco that he spent the next three decades refining. He created house blends for the shop (most notably “Sublime Porte”) and kept experimenting with his own mixtures on the side.

In 1998, while on temporary disability for carpal tunnel syndrome from his career as a computer scientist, Pease looked at the list of things his doctor told him he wasn’t allowed to do. Blending tobacco wasn’t on there. He started a company. By early 2000, G.L. Pease Tobacco was born, and it has grown into one of the most respected small batch tobacco companies in the world. Greg’s blends are manufactured by C&D (Cornell & Diehl) in the United States. The Fog City Selection, which includes Union Square, is named for San Francisco, Pease’s home city, and each blend in the collection takes its name from a San Francisco neighborhood or landmark.

The Fog City Selection

Union Square is part of G.L. Pease’s Fog City Selection, a collection of blends inspired by San Francisco. Union Square itself is named for the famous plaza in downtown San Francisco, the city’s central shopping and cultural district. Other Fog City Selection blends include Telegraph Hill, Barbary Coast, Montgomery, Fillmore, Laurel Heights, and Sixpence, each named for a San Francisco neighborhood or reference. The collection spans pure Virginias, Virginia and Perique blends, and English and Balkan mixtures, with Union Square representing the purest Virginia expression in the lineup.

Preparing the flakes

Union Square’s pressed flake format offers three preparation methods. Rubbing out breaks the flakes into a loose ribbon that lights easily and burns evenly, ideal for smokers who want a straightforward loading experience. Fold and stuff takes a whole flake, folds it in half or into thirds, and inserts it vertically into the bowl for a denser, slower burn that concentrates the Virginia flavors. The hybrid method rubs out most of the flake loosely but leaves a few chunks intact for variety in the burn. All three methods work well with Union Square. The flakes are evenly cut and break apart without difficulty. If the tobacco feels damp out of the tin, rubbing it out and allowing it to air dry for 15 to 20 minutes eliminates any moisture related lighting issues.

Cellaring potential

Virginia flakes are among the best pipe tobaccos for long term aging, and Union Square’s pressed format makes it an ideal candidate for cellaring. The natural sugars in Virginia leaf undergo slow chemical changes over time, deepening from bright, tangy sweetness into richer caramel, molasses, and dried fruit notes. The pressing process helps this by keeping the leaf in tight contact, allowing the different Virginia grades to continue exchanging flavors and oils inside the sealed tin. Smokers who cellar Union Square for two to five years report a smoother, darker, more unified flavor where the bright and red Virginias merge into something greater than either contributes alone. Ten year aged tins are prized among collectors. Sealed tins stored in a cool, dark, stable environment will continue developing for years.

Pairings

Union Square’s natural fruity sweetness, toasty bread notes, and caramel character pair naturally with a medium roast coffee, where the coffee’s nutty, caramel qualities echo the tobacco’s brown sugar and baked bread elements. A pour over or French press brings out the coffee’s fruit notes to match the blend’s figs and raisins. For tea, a Darjeeling or Ceylon with its bright, tangy character mirrors the Virginia’s natural tartness. Sherry (oloroso or amontillado) is a classic Virginia flake pairing, with the wine’s dried fruit, caramel, and nutty oxidative character creating a unified experience. A tawny port shares similar qualities. For lighter pairings, a wheat beer or Belgian blonde matches the bread and hay notes, and apple cider (still or sparkling) complements the natural fruit sweetness without overpowering the tobacco’s subtlety.

What is G.L. Pease Union Square?

It is a 100% Virginia flake blended from bright and red flue cured Virginias, pressed into cake and sliced, with no added sugars, toppings, or flavorings. First released in June 2009 as the first pure Virginia blend developed by G.L. Pease. Part of the Fog City Selection.

What does Union Square taste like?

Dark sweet fruit (figs, raisins, apricots, stewed fruit) from the char light, evolving into baked bread, hay, brown sugar, caramel, and a vinegar tang that one reviewer described as a “balsamic vinegar effect.” Toasty, earthy, and smooth with no bite. Pipes Magazine called it “amazing” and said it almost tastes like an aromatic despite containing zero toppings.

Does Union Square have any added flavoring?

No. Zero added sugars, toppings, casings, or artificial flavorings. All sweetness and complexity comes from the natural sugar content of the flue cured Virginia leaf. Virginia tobacco naturally contains the highest sugar concentration of any tobacco varietal.

How should I prepare the flakes?

Three methods work well. Rub out into loose ribbon for easy lighting. Fold and stuff whole flakes for a denser, slower burn. Or use a hybrid approach with mostly rubbed out tobacco and a few intact chunks. If the tobacco feels damp, air dry rubbed out flakes for 15 to 20 minutes before loading.

Does Union Square age well?

Extremely well. Virginia flakes are among the best pipe tobaccos for cellaring. The natural sugars deepen over time into richer caramel, molasses, and dried fruit. Sealed tins stored in a cool, dark, stable environment will continue developing for years. Two to five year old tins show noticeable improvement, and ten year tins are prized among collectors.
