Detailed Description

Blend 113 showcases the versatility of Virginia tobacco, starting with sweet red varieties that offer deep, bready undertones and balancing them with broad bright leaf selected for tangy, citrus clarity. Broken Virginia flake pieces further layer the palate, providing slow-releasing sugars that shine particularly as the bowl progresses.

Sweet Black Cavendish, double-fermented for optimal smoothness, rounds out the composition with marshmallow-like softness and prevents tongue bite throughout extended sessions. The wild cut—an intricate mix of cube cut, ribbon, and broken flake—ensures flavor evolution bowl by bowl. Initial lighting reveals sharp berry notes, soon balanced by creamy coconut and rum warmth as core Virginias and Cavendish take center stage.

Topping application remains a hallmark of German restraint. Rather than creating a cloying profile, the blackcurrant animates the retrohale, rum provides subtle alcoholic undertones, and coconut cream evokes memories of pastry shops and Caribbean cocktails. This topping configuration sets Blend 113 apart, ideal for those seeking complexity beyond standard fruit or vanilla-forward blends.

Kohlhase & Kopp’s manufacturing process involves meticulous blending, controlled moisture levels, and batch consistency validated by the brand’s European reputation. Each tin arrives ready for packing, and cellaring only strengthens the integrated dessert and fruit notes while mellowing the rum and coconut toppings.

How does the wild cut affect smoking dynamics?

Wild cut creates irregular airflow paths and burn rates, allowing different tobacco pieces to combust at varied intervals. This produces nuanced flavor progression as cube cuts delay sugar release, ribbons ignite quickly, and broken flakes offer measured transitions. Smokers experience evolving berry, rum, and coconut sensations throughout each session.

Is Blend 113 suitable for dessert pairing or post-meal enjoyment?

The dessert-focused topped style makes Blend 113 ideal as a post-meal treat. Blackcurrant and coconut cream create layered sweetness balanced by rum warmth, all underpinned by restrained Virginia character. Many pipe smokers recommend pairing this blend with coffee or light digestifs to highlight the pastry shop room note.

Does the blackcurrant topping overpower natural tobacco flavor?

The blackcurrant presents assertively on initial light and retrohale, but German blending restraint ensures that natural sugar components from Virginia leaf remain present throughout. As the session continues, coconut cream and rum notes take over, allowing the underlying tobacco character to persist.

How does cellaring affect topping intensity?

Cellaring Blend 113 creates deeper integration of fruit and tobacco flavors. Over 6-12 months, the topping intensity mellows and coconut cream and rum notes blend further into the base leaf, producing smoother, more balanced bowls. The wild cut structure preserves moisture well, ensuring long-term storage doesn’t desiccate the blend.

What pipe shapes best showcase the blend’s flavor complexity?

Medium to wide bowls allow for flavor layering, with the wild cut adapting flexibly to different chamber shapes. Briar pipes accentuate dessert aromas, while meerschaum highlights Virginia sweetness and hot, dry sessions in cobs can intensify berry and coconut notes. Pipes dedicated to topped blends maximize pastry shop room presence.

Is the nicotine strength suitable for novices?

Blend 113 leans towards mild, with medium body and restrained nicotine content. Beginners should find it approachable, though the wild cut structure requires occasional relights and attention to avoid uneven burning. The dessert-forward profile encourages exploratory smoking for those new to topped blends.

Does the coconut cream remain present throughout the bowl?

The coconut cream acts as a lingering undertone, matching blackcurrant brightness up front before melding with rum and Virginia character in the mid and final thirds. Some smokers notice coconut more strongly during slow, cool sips than aggressive puffing.

Can this blend be enjoyed outdoors without losing room note quality?

While the pastry shop room note shines in enclosed spaces, Blend 113 holds its complexity even outdoors. The wild cut preserves the topping’s projection, ensuring berry, rum, and coconut notes remain detectable and pleasant even with swirling breezes during patio or garden sessions.
