Alfonso Gran Selección: Five Years of Patience, One Exceptional Smoke
Nelson Alfonso Egüed built his reputation on patience. The founder of Selected Tobacco S.A. applies techniques borrowed from fine winemaking to craft cigars that demand extended aging periods most manufacturers would consider impractical. The Alfonso Gran Selección represents the culmination of this philosophy, spending five full years in aging rooms before reaching smokers. This release joins an already distinguished portfolio that includes Atabey and Byron, brands recognized among collectors for meticulous construction and refined flavor profiles.
What separates this cigar from the earlier Alfonso Añejo lies in the aging process itself. Selected Tobacco ages the Gran Selección in two distinct environments: traditional Spanish cedar rooms and innovative French oak-lined chambers. The French oak technique, uncommon in cigar production but standard in winemaking, imparts subtle complexity to the tobacco. The result skews darker and more robust than the Añejo while maintaining the elegance that defines the Alfonso line. Production takes place at Tabacos de Costa Rica, where Selected Tobacco produces its entire portfolio under controlled conditions.
What Sets It Apart
- Five-year dual aging process using Spanish cedar and French oak-lined rooms creates layered complexity rarely found in contemporary production cigars
- Ecuadorian Habano wrapper selected for oil content and rich color delivers darker flavors than the original Alfonso Añejo
- Peruvian binder combined with Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers produces medium strength with medium to full body
- Manufactured at Tabacos de Costa Rica under Selected Tobacco’s exacting quality standards ensures consistent construction
- Limited availability reflects extended aging requirements and small batch production philosophy
- Follows the Alfonso Extra Añejo, which earned recognition on Halfwheel’s Top 25 list in 2022
Construction and Appearance
The Ecuadorian Habano wrapper displays an oily sheen with a color that falls somewhere between milk chocolate and colorado maduro. Veins remain well pressed, and the oil content suggests proper aging conditions. When squeezed, the cigar shows firm, even density without hard spots. The cap receives a precise triple application, and the overall construction reflects the care typical of Selected Tobacco releases. Smokers who have handled Atabey or Byron will recognize the attention to detail in the bunch and roll.
Wrapper aromas present aged cedar, sweet tobacco, hints of cocoa, and subtle leather. The foot reveals stronger cedar notes, barnyard character, roasted nuts, and faint spice. The cold draw delivers chocolate, leather, and a slight mixed fruit sweetness without being overly loose or tight.
Flavor Profile
The Gran Selección opens with natural tobacco notes moving quickly to the forefront, supported by chocolate, aged wood, and white pepper. Floral undertones add refinement without dominating. The retrohale amplifies the wood notes and introduces additional complexity. This combination of earthy richness and subtle spice defines the opening third, with the cigar settling into a medium strength profile.
Moving into the second third, the natural tobacco remains primary while pepper and wood notes increase in intensity. Brown sugar sweetness emerges, along with leather tack and baking spices. One reviewer noted a milky quality appearing at this stage, followed by sweet toast and elegant spice. The body pushes into medium to full territory while strength holds steady at medium. The French oak aging becomes more apparent here, contributing a refined spiciness distinct from raw pepper heat.
The final third brings forward mineral notes, malted chocolate, and occasionally pronounced powdery or floral characteristics. The wood and tobacco combination deepens without turning harsh. Some cigars finish with finger-burning intensity, a sign smokers resist putting them down. Strength remains medium throughout, though body maintains its medium to full presence. Total smoking time varies by vitola but expect extended sessions from the larger ring gauges.

Who Should Smoke This Cigar?
The Alfonso Gran Selección targets experienced smokers who appreciate extended aging and refined construction over bold strength. Those familiar with Atabey or Byron will recognize the Selected Tobacco house style: balanced, elegant, complex without overwhelming the palate. The medium strength makes this approachable for various times of day, while the medium to full body provides enough substance to satisfy veteran smokers. The Gran Selección works well for special occasions when the extended smoking time and premium positioning justify the selection.
Smokers seeking aggressive strength or pronounced pepper should look elsewhere. This cigar rewards patience and attention, revealing layered flavors that develop throughout the smoking experience. The French oak aging contributes nuance that some palates may not immediately detect, particularly if smoked too quickly or without proper preparation.
What is the Alfonso Gran Selección cigar?
The Alfonso Gran Selección is a premium cigar line from Selected Tobacco S.A., named after founder Nelson Alfonso Egüed. It features an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Peruvian binder, and Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers aged for five years in Spanish cedar and French oak-lined rooms.
How does the Alfonso Gran Selección differ from the Alfonso Añejo?
The Gran Selección offers a darker, richer flavor profile compared to the Añejo. While both undergo five-year aging, the Gran Selección uses French oak-lined aging rooms in addition to Spanish cedar, creating more complex and robust characteristics with added spice notes.
What strength level is the Alfonso Gran Selección?
The Alfonso Gran Selección falls into the medium strength category throughout the smoking experience. The body ranges from medium to full, providing substantial richness without overwhelming the palate. This balance makes it suitable for various times of day.
Where are Alfonso Gran Selección cigars made?
All Alfonso Gran Selección cigars are produced at Tabacos de Costa Rica in Costa Rica. This is the same factory where Selected Tobacco manufactures its entire portfolio, including Atabey and Byron brands, under controlled quality standards.
What sizes are available in the Alfonso Gran Selección line?
The Gran Selección line includes five vitolas: Exclusivos (6 x 54 torpedo), Preciosos (7.5 x 40 lancero), Estelares (5.5 x 54 robusto), Enormes (6.5 x 60 gordo), and Grandiosos (8 x 50 Churchill). Boxes contain 25 cigars.
What does the French oak aging do to the tobacco?
French oak aging, a technique borrowed from winemaking, adds subtle spice notes and refined complexity to the tobacco. Smokers familiar with Selected Tobacco products can detect the difference compared to cigars aged exclusively in cedar, noting a more elegant spiciness distinct from raw pepper.
What flavors can I expect from the Alfonso Gran Selección?
Expect natural tobacco, aged wood, chocolate, leather, baking spices, brown sugar, and white pepper. The retrohale emphasizes wood notes while the profile develops floral undertones and mineral characteristics. The final third often brings malted chocolate and powdery or toast notes.
How long does it take to smoke an Alfonso Gran Selección?
Smoking time varies by vitola. The smaller Estelares (5.5 x 54) typically takes 60 to 75 minutes, while larger formats like the Enormes (6.5 x 60) or Grandiosos (8 x 50) can extend beyond 90 minutes. Construction allows for slow, relaxed pacing without burn issues.

Very smooth straight from the draw! Well-constructed, thick smoke, and clean burn. It’s definitely one of the more pricey sticks compared to what I’m used to, but definitely worth a try!

This one was fantastic. I have very high expectation when it comes to anything from Selected Tobacco, and they are met or exceeded almost every time. This one definitely skews more toward the Byron profile, which I don’t mind at all. Brown sugar, light earth and leather, a variety of baking spices, malted chocolate; the flavors are phenomenal. I have smoked enough Atabey and Byron to notice the difference the French oak used in the aging rooms makes, it’s a little spicier in profile, but it’s still super refined. It’s not a super light cigar but it never quite gets to medium strength. The burn was perfection, as was the draw, and I was burning my fingers by the end. Didn’t want to put it down, I’ll be getting a few more!

Entering the middle section, a sudden milky flavor pops up, and then the smoke begins to show the flavor of spices. The middle section smoke mainly presents sweet toast, spices, and occasionally one or two very strong powdery aromas. The taste is relatively calm, more elegant, and the spicy taste is completely gone. The tail section is fragrant, and the strong powdery flavor in the middle section is delicious, like an explosion.
