AVO XO
The AVO XO represents a revolutionary achievement in tobacco aging, becoming the first cigar to showcase Dominican tobaccos aged for six years, establishing a new industry standard for complexity and refinement. Created by jazz legend Avo Uvezian and master blender Hendrik Kelner at Davidoff’s prestigious Dominican factory, this medium-bodied masterpiece features sun-grown Ecuador Connecticut wrapper embracing meticulously aged Dominican fillers, delivering a sophisticated profile that bridges the gap between approachable elegance and bold complexity.

Each vitola within the XO range offers distinct smoking experiences while maintaining the blend’s signature character. The popular Intermezzo robusto (5 x 50) provides ideal flavor concentration in a 60-minute format, while the Legato (6 x 54) extends enjoyment with enhanced creaminess. The elegant Preludio (6 x 40) delivers concentrated flavors perfect for shorter sessions, and the majestic Maestoso churchill (7 x 48) showcases the blend’s full evolution over 90 minutes. The Notturno (5 x 54) offers a unique wide-gauge robusto experience, while the compact Allegro (4½ x 54) provides surprising complexity in a shorter format.
Customer reviews consistently highlight AVO XO’s position as the perfect stepping stone from mild to fuller-bodied cigars. Many note its “signature Davidoff mustiness” combined with unexpected zip and complexity, featuring wood, leather, earth, and chili pepper flakes that create a more dynamic experience than typical Dominican cigars. Reviewers praise the construction excellence expected from Davidoff production, with perfect draw resistance, sharp burn lines, and consistent performance. The profile’s balance of creamy smoothness with darker spice accents makes it particularly appealing to those seeking Davidoff quality at a more accessible price point.

What makes the six-year aging process revolutionary?
AVO XO pioneered extended aging when six years was considered excessive, establishing a new industry benchmark. This patient maturation transforms Dominican tobaccos into exceptionally smooth, complex leaves that develop unique flavors including distinctive charred wood notes, sweet molasses, and refined cedar impossible to achieve with standard aging periods.
How does sun-grown Ecuador Connecticut differ from shade-grown?
Sun-grown Ecuador Connecticut develops under direct sunlight, creating thicker, more flavorful leaves with additional oils and richness compared to shade-grown varieties. This results in a golden-brown wrapper with enhanced complexity, contributing bolder flavors while maintaining the smoothness associated with Connecticut-seed tobacco.
Which AVO XO vitola best showcases the blend?
The Intermezzo robusto offers ideal balance in a 60-minute format, concentrating flavors perfectly. The Legato provides enhanced creaminess with its wider gauge, while the Preludio delivers intensity in shorter sessions. Many consider the Maestoso churchill the ultimate expression, allowing full appreciation of the blend’s evolution.
How does XO compare to AVO Classic?
AVO XO delivers significantly more complexity and strength than Classic, with cedar, cocoa, and charred wood notes replacing Classic’s pure creaminess. The six-year aging versus Classic’s 25-year creates different profiles, with XO offering bolder flavors, spice accents, and that distinctive Davidoff mustiness while maintaining exceptional smoothness.
Is this suitable for those new to medium-bodied cigars?
Absolutely. AVO XO bridges mild and full-bodied cigars perfectly, offering complexity without overwhelming intensity. The smooth Dominican character remains approachable while the six-year aging adds sophisticated flavors that keep experienced smokers engaged, making it ideal for palate development.
What flavors dominate the AVO XO experience?
Expect warm toasted tobacco and cedar opening notes, developing into cocoa and sweet molasses through the middle third. Distinctive charred wood emerges alongside subtle spice, particularly chili pepper flakes. Many detect leather, earth, and coffee undertones, all balanced by underlying creaminess characteristic of Davidoff production.
When should I smoke an AVO XO?
The medium body makes XO versatile for various occasions. Many enjoy it as an afternoon smoke when Classic feels too mild, or as an evening cigar without the intensity of full-bodied options. The complexity pairs excellently with aged spirits or medium-roast coffee, making it perfect for contemplative moments.
How does construction compare to flagship Davidoff lines?
AVO XO maintains identical construction standards to premium Davidoff lines, being produced in the same O.K. Cigars factory under Hendrik Kelner’s supervision. Expect flawless draw, razor-sharp burn lines, firm white ash, and the signature Davidoff refinement at a more accessible price point than flagship offerings.

A very pleasant cigar that’s smooth and mild all throughout. Good complexity with notes of hay, bread and spices balanced by wood, cedar and coffee. The burn was excellent and no re-lights or touch ups were needed. The draw seemed a little tight, but was not a problem. Personally, I prefer the XO to the milder, more floral Classic.

This one has that classic Davidoff musty profile but it has more zip to it than most of the Davidoff line. It has a lot of wood and leather to it, mixed with earth and chili pepper flakes. There is not a lot of sweetness to this blend but it still feels somewhat balanced. The construction was very nice, perfect draw, sharp burn. It’s to something I seek out, but I’m not mad about smoking one either.

Avo as a whole is an understated brand but this is their powerhouse. Strong cedar and pepper tastes, this cigar has a ton of in your face flavor that is atypical for the brand and Dominican cigars in general.

This is the AVO to choose if one finds the Classic too mild and too straight-forward (I’ll contend the Classic has plenty of nuance, but that’s me!). This is definitely a step up in strength and diversity compared to the Classic nonetheless, and I believe it is best enjoyed in petit corona or robusto format as this allows one to enjoy the cigar as a special occasion or with briefer pauses in the day, such as after a weekend breakfast. In so many ways, this cigar reminds me of the Davidoff Grand Cru line, but it is somewhat more affordable; it doesn’t have quite the same level of refinement, but it has the signature Davidoff earthy-ness, the velvety body, but with some darker and pleasant spice accents (accents, not big notes). This is what someone should buy who wants to enjoy Davidoff quality but can’t always find them or perhaps balks at their cost.

This Avo kept true to the milder, creamier experience with traces of trademark Davidoff mustiness. Overall I would say semi-sweet café au lait and cedar on the finish. Construction was solid and overall an excellent mild cigar.

If money isn’t an option, this is the one I would smoke everyday. Exceptional taste and complexity. By far the best of the AVOs. I recommend the Legato or Preludio.
