Black Label Trading Co. Orthodox
Black Label Trading Co. Orthodox is a bold, audacious cigar that honors the brand’s roots in powerful, full-bodied blending. Born from James Brown’s signature style and rolled at Nicaragua’s renowned Fábrica Oveja Negra, Orthodox is a testament to the intensity and finesse possible in modern craft cigars.
- Mexican San Andrés wrapper – Delivers invigorating spice, richness, and a luxuriously dark aesthetic
- Equadorian Habano binder & Nicaraguan fillers – Build a robust foundation packed with character, depth, and resonance
- Powerful full-bodied profile – Aggressive yet balanced, perfect for fans of strong, complex smokes
- Complex flavor journey – Flavors include dark fruit (cherry, raisin), malt, chocolate, leather, coffee, charred meat, and dynamic spice (crushed red pepper, star anise); grows deeper with each third
- Limited edition release – Only 900 boxes per size, enhancing its desirability and exclusivity
- Impeccable construction – Praised for perfect draw, beautiful burn, and sturdy ash throughout
Orthodox is not for the faint-hearted. The experience is assertively spicy from the start, but complexity develops as you smoke—malt, leather, chocolate, and an undertone of charred meat join in, with fruit and herbal notes peeking through. A star anise finish lingers, making this a memorable and multi-dimensional smoke. Coronas and other sizes offer similar depth in unique proportions.
Reviewers consistently describe Orthodox as aggressive yet harmonious—powerhouse flavor and body, with enough elegance to keep it engaging rather than overwhelming. Some suggest its boldness would benefit from aging, while others praise its construction and complexity outright. In sum, Orthodox is essential for fans of Black Label Trading Co. and adventurous cigar smokers seeking intensity, rich spice, and a unique modern profile.

Maybe my palate is leaning more toward more ‘Medium’ cigars lately, but it seems like I’m enjoying the more nuanced releases from Black Label more than their high-octane cigars. This one is perfect any time of day. Burn and draw are very good. Nice flavors too.

Beautiful dark wrapper with excellent draw. This was starts with a medium strength that offers malt, chocolate, and light spice. The complexity grows as the cigar burns. The final third has my mouth watering with each draw. Another amazing blend by BLTC.

This one is distinctly Black Label. Very strong, about an 8 out of ten, and very full bodied and full flavored. It had moments where the profile bordered on being bitter, but rode the line very well. I feel this is one that I could bury in my humidor for five years and it would only get better, and it’s a little too harsh for me currently. Still, it burned very well, excellent draw too. Not my favorite offering from BLTC but if you like the majority of what they put out,you should absolutely try it. If you don’t like aggressive cigars, this is not for you.

I enjoyed the new Black Label Trading Co. Orthodox. It was definitely spicy, but not overpoweringly so. The spice was present throughout, but it was balanced by prominent flavors like most of Black Label’s other blends. This cigar is a must-try for smokers seeking a bold and complex experience.

I thought this was a superb stick. I got strong notes of leather, coffee and an almost charred meat flavor as well. I did get a little pepper on this in the form of crushed red pepper. Really nice offering here. The construction was on point with an absolutely perfect draw. Great burn line. Held a decent ash all the way through. I was really impressed with the flavors this brought. Would definitely smoke this again.
