I enjoyed the Paper Crane. While it was a good cigar, there nothing special about it. It was lack luster for me. Mid way through the cigar I got some nice citrus notes on it.

First timer with any stick from Black Works Studio – overall smoke was solid, but similarly to the previous review – nothing notable stood out during the journey of the smoke.

I had never had a Black Works Studio cigar, but by chance met the owner last year and resolved to buy some – most of their cigars are pretty peppery (not my thing), so when I saw this L.E. coming out that was supposed to be full-flavoured but not as relentless, I bought a box. Very, very glad I did.
Caramel, mixed nuts, cinnamon, and a distinct citrus zest – it’s interesting that most people do pick up on this last note, and it really is there – such a great flavour in a cigar, especially for anyone who prefers light roast and intense coffees and espressos. For body, it has the texture of a light cream with a mild cedar accent. Toward the end of the cigar, I picked up smoked wood (I’d say cedar again), chocolate espresso beans, and a fuller body. Lots of flavours, and distinct ‘thirds’ to the profile.
One factor that I appreciated was that (unlike a lot of other brands), this Limited Edition cigar did not ‘only’ come in a toro format; this corona gorda is a bit unconventionally shaped as a slightly thinner robusto rather than the most traditional dimensions of the size, but being someone who very much appreciates smaller ring gauges and shorter cigars, I found this very appealing – burn time was approximately one full hour.
Ultimately, while I don’t go for mild Connecticuts, I don’t go for the full-force Nicaraguans either – I prefer cigars in the middle ground, and this fits the bill – the dynamic flavours of a Connecticut, with some of the crescendo of a full-body cigar; with tobacco from both regions, this makes sense and I believe the resulting mix of flavours to be clear evidence of highly skillful blending. This is definitely my favourite cigar of the past year as far as ‘new to me’ cigars go, without question; if I was to nitpick, construction was the only drawback – it required two touch-ups (minor ones) and the ash held on for half an inch at a time at most – no dime-stacking here.

A pleasant surprise from Black Works. The wrapper is impeccable with almost no visible seams on it. After cutting, I was met with a perfect draw. Not too tight, not too open. The cold draw didn’t really bring anything to the party, but on the first light I was met with very potent cedar and spice notes, with some cream on the back of the palate. As the smoke progressed, I was given plenty of cedar, hay, spice, and steam throughout. About midway the cigar started giving me some citrus flavors, which I wasn’t expecting. Definitely a medium-full cigar with the extra spice on the retrohale. I bet these flavors will meld over time into a superior tasting medium strength cigar. It definitely has me coming back for more!

Solid stick. This was the second I smoked as the first had some serious construction issues. This one (corona) smoked real well. Got some classic Conny flavors, cream, hay and some citrus from this. Wasn’t a huge fan of the box press on this as I felt it was a little too thin. Overall good stick I was happy to smoke.

Being used to full bodied cigars this was a little light for me, flavors were however fantastic, I would recommend having this stick with a cup of Dark roast coffee, a very good combination. I enjoyed this stick to the end.

I’ve smoked two of these so far. The first one was a bummer, when I got a good puff of smoke it was delicious, but the construction and draw were very poor. The second one wasn’t stellar in the construction department but it was serviceable, much better draw with just a couple touch ups needed. It’s a bolder shade wrapper as you would expect from these guys, but I love that. Medium bodied, tons of flavor. I just hope the last three smoke better.
