Crowned Heads CHC Serie E
The Crowned Heads CHC Serie E is a medium to medium full bodied, box pressed Nicaraguan puro wrapped in a dark, oily Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro leaf over a Nicaraguan Jalapa binder and Nicaraguan fillers from Jalapa, Ometepe, and Pueblo Nuevo, handcrafted at Tabacalera Pichardo in Esteli, Nicaragua. The “E” stands for Eddie Van Halen, and the blend draws its creative inspiration from Van Halen’s legendary 1978 guitar solo “Eruption,” a one minute and 42 second burst of technical brilliance that changed rock music forever. Crowned Heads co founder Jon Huber described the smoking experience as “a medium plus bodied dance on the edge between technical mastery and random entropy, resolving in a balanced, melodious harmony.” From its opening blast of baking spice, leather, and pepper through its mid palate waves of caramel, cocoa, and espresso to its leather and oak finish, the Serie E delivers a cigar that evolves with the same restless energy and precision as the solo that inspired it. Available in four box pressed vitolas and packaged in boxes of 20.
- Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper with a dark chocolate, red hued color, fine tooth, moderate oil, and a firm pack that delivers depth, sweetness, and a signature oily texture from the first draw.
- Nicaraguan Jalapa binder contributes smooth, creamy pepper and a structural foundation that ties the filler tobaccos together into a cohesive, flowing profile.
- Nicaraguan fillers from three distinct growing regions: Jalapa for smooth sweetness, Ometepe for volcanic mineral complexity, and Pueblo Nuevo for body and spice, creating a multi layered blend that shifts and evolves throughout the smoke.
- Box pressed format across all four vitolas provides a comfortable grip, even burn, and a cool smoking temperature that allows the Habano Oscuro wrapper to express its full flavor potential.
- Inspired by Eddie Van Halen’s “Eruption” guitar solo from the 1978 debut album, the second release in the Crowned Heads Court (CHC) line where every blend pays tribute to a music legend.
- Medium to medium full body with a complex, evolving flavor profile featuring baking spices, leather, earth, cocoa, espresso, caramel, vanilla, pepper, cedar, berry, citrus, cream, nuts, and oak.
- Handcrafted at Tabacalera Pichardo, the Nicaraguan factory co owned by Eradio Pichardo and Luciano Meirelles of ACE Prime, Crowned Heads’ strategic alliance partner.
The Crowned Heads Court
The CHC line, short for Crowned Heads Court, is a series where each release draws creative inspiration from a legendary musician or iconic piece of music. The first CHC blend was the CHC Reserve, a bold, spicy Nicaraguan cigar with a Mexican San Andres wrapper. The Serie E followed as the second installment, debuting at the 2021 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show. Where the Reserve channeled raw power, the Serie E channels controlled complexity, mirroring the way Van Halen’s “Eruption” combines speed, technique, harmonics, and dive bombs into a single, unified performance.
Jon Huber explained the connection: “I listened to that solo and saw it as a sonic metaphor for smoking this cigar. From the drum and bass intro, which I saw as the cutting, lighting, and prep of the cigar, to the mixing of triads and harmonics which I compared to the complexity of the flavor profile, to the bottoming out dive bombs that was reminiscent of the finish of the cigar, it all paralleled seamlessly.” That creative philosophy, translating the energy and emotion of music into the physical experience of smoking a cigar, is what makes the CHC line unique in the Crowned Heads portfolio.
Crowned Heads
Crowned Heads was co founded by Jon Huber and Mike Conder in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2011. The brand takes its name from the old expression “crowned heads of Europe,” and the company has built its identity around a boutique approach that emphasizes quality, creativity, and storytelling. Nashville’s deep roots in music culture permeate the brand, and the CHC line is the most direct expression of that connection. The broader Crowned Heads portfolio includes Le Careme, Las Calaveras, Four Kicks, Jericho Hill, Juarez, and Mil Dias, each produced at different Nicaraguan factories and each reflecting Huber’s hands on approach to blend development.
The three region filler blend
The Serie E draws its filler tobaccos from three of Nicaragua’s four major growing regions, each contributing a distinct personality to the finished blend. Jalapa, located in the northeastern highlands near the Honduran border, produces smooth, sweet tobacco with a refined character. Ometepe, a volcanic island in Lake Nicaragua, contributes mineral complexity and a unique terroir that is impossible to replicate in any other growing region. Pueblo Nuevo, in the Segovia region, delivers body, spice, and a raw intensity that provides the blend’s backbone. The interplay between these three regions is what gives the Serie E its restless, evolving quality, as different tobaccos take the lead at different points in the smoke.
Smoking experience
The Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper is dark chocolate brown with a red hue, fine tooth, moderate oil, and a firm pack. The box press gives the cigar a rectangular profile with rounded edges. The pre light aroma from the wrapper presents milk chocolate, earth, leather, and oak, while the foot delivers dark chocolate, raisins, and dried fruit. The cold draw brings mocha, cedar, and a mild spice on the lips.
The Serie E opens with authority. Baking spices hit the palate immediately, joined by leather, toasted cedar, and a sharp black pepper on the retrohale that demands attention from the first puff. Caramel emerges quickly underneath the spice, adding a rich sweetness that balances the pepper’s bite. A strawberry preserve note appears with a gorgeous, rich berry sweetness that weaves in and out of the warm, buttery profile. Vanilla threads through the baking spice, and citrus frets in and out as an accent note. The smoke is thick, oily, and abundant. Strength reads medium to medium full, and the opening third delivers more flavor complexity in its first inch than many cigars manage across their entire length.
The second third transitions into a darker, richer territory. Espresso and cocoa move to the forefront, replacing the baking spice as the primary drivers. The caramel persists and deepens, and the oily smoke gives a long, lingering finish that coats the palate between draws. Cream joins the profile and intertwines with a nutty note, creating an almond or cashew quality that pairs beautifully with the espresso. The pepper settles into a warm, creamy presence on the retrohale rather than the sharp bite of the opening, and the berry sweetness from the first third continues to appear in flashes. Toasted bread and a baked quality add warmth and body. Earth builds steadily through the middle section, grounding the sweeter top notes.
The final third brings the Serie E to its crescendo. Leather and oak step forward as the primary flavors, joined by earth, dark chocolate, and a spicy red pepper that replaces the earlier black and white pepper. The espresso from the second third lingers on the palate, and caramel continues as a sweet counterpoint to the bolder, savory finish. The smoke remains thick and oily to the end, and the finish grows longer and more intense with each puff. Strength edges toward medium full by the nub, and the cigar finishes warm, bold, and deeply satisfying, a crescendo that mirrors the final dive bomb of Van Halen’s solo. Construction is excellent, with a straight burn, firm ash, and a draw that produces thick, rich smoke throughout.

The Eddie Van Halen connection
“Eruption” is a one minute and 42 second instrumental guitar solo that opens Side One, Track Two of Van Halen’s self titled 1978 debut album. It is widely considered one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded, introducing techniques like two handed tapping, harmonics, and tremolo bar dive bombs to a mainstream audience and fundamentally changing the way the electric guitar was played. Eddie Van Halen passed away on October 6, 2020, and the CHC Serie E, which debuted in 2021, stands as a tribute to his creative legacy. The band and box designs incorporate elements inspired by Van Halen’s iconic “Frankenstrat” guitar, with its distinctive striped pattern, making the Serie E as visually striking as it is flavorful.

Really liked this. To be honest Crowned Heads is becoming one of my favorite brands to smoke. Pretty much everything that I’ve tried from them has been good. This one performed well. Really got good earthy flavors with coffee and leather. Construction was great. Loved the draw and smoke output was good. Paired well with a great bourbon. Another great stick from Oxford. I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up more.

I’ll be honest, I wanted these since I am a huge VH fan, and to for Crowned Heads to produce a cigar to remember Eddie is awesome. I did not know the bands also had the famous guitar art as well….Thanks Crowned Heads! The cigar is not too bad either, the two I’ve had have been well constructed, burned even and fairly typical maduro flavors.
