When it is just lit, you can feel a very soft smell of tobacco, followed by a mixture of various flavors of pepper, leather, wood, flower, and toast, which are difficult to distinguish. This chaotic feeling continues until it is close to the secondary label, and then you can clearly feel the taste of pepper, coffee, and cocoa, and the aroma of roasted grains mixed with some spices brought by the nose as the main line. The overall smoke is very soft, and there is no pressure when it passes through the nose.

The Escurio line from Davidoff is just kind of meh. It has a strong earthy profile that reminds me too much of grass and dirt. It’s not awful, but it’s not going in my Top 50 anytime soon.

I can appreciate the quality of davidoff, the burn, construction, etc… But more often than not they leave me wanting more. Not with the escurio. This thing packs a punch and is far and away my favorite cigar in the davidoff portfolio.

I was turned to this cigar based on the chocolate flavor notes. I did not get the level of chocolate as I expected. In the first 1/3 of the cigar, I got lime zest which I have never experienced with any other cigar before which made this cigar very interesting. And as I progressed into the last portion of the first 1/3 of the cigar there was licorice notes with an earthy aroma throughout the cigar. Halfway through the cigar I started to get slight notes of chocolate. The construction of the cigar was on point with no issues as per usual of any Davidoff cigar.

This is only a slight step down from the famous Davidoff Winston Churchill Late Hour – it’s a bit more sweet, a bit less leathery, with some licorice and salt, but similar in its oaky, rich profile. Perhaps best of all, this cigar is more affordable than the Late Hour, and it also comes in the popular perfecto shape.
I was recently able to try one of these from a friend, and it was also recommended to me by Oxford – I had to buy a box. These are Davidoff unlike their core line – if you don’t find yourself impressed by the white label’s elegance, then perhaps the Escurio richness will suit you better – it has many of the hallmarks of the best maduros out there, but without being abrasively heavy or strong.

I’ve had the Escurio in the past, but never in this perfecto vitola. I find the Escurio blend to be up there in flavor and power with Davidoffs heaviest hitters like the Yamasa, Nicaragua, Millennium and Davidoff Late Hour. I find the core Davidoff lines to be a little underwhelming for the price. Yes, they are incredibly smooth and refined, but for the price I want something a little more exciting than the classic Davidoff offerings. I like when they venture out of their comfort zone a little, sometimes it pays off, and I think they achieve that with the Escurio.
As for this particular shape, I think its a winner. the draw is a little tight to start as is often the case with perfectos, but it very quickly opens up. The burn line too is a little wonky but quickly self corrects and then burns like a razor from that point. The flavors shift in interesting ways as I smoke through the tapers, starting somewhat sharp and Spivey, and then mellowing out as I get into the large gauges. There is a smokiness to the flavor profile that mixes well with the peppery aspect of the tobacco. I get some salinity from this blend, a little dark chocolate and lots of espresso. The chocolate comes up nicely in the middle section, and even though these more aggressive flavors maintain throughout this cigar so too does that classic Davidoff barnyard backbone.
I still think my favorite thing I’ve ever had from Davidoff is the Yamasa, but this is up there too. Interesting flavors while still remaining definitively Davidoff.
