Detailed Description
Special Brown Flake showcases the art of Virginia tobacco blending at its finest. The foundation consists of carefully aged Virginia leaf that delivers natural sweetness and depth, while the rum casing adds layers of sophistication without overwhelming the tobacco’s inherent character. Each flake presents uniformly with dark brown tones punctuated by lighter brown flecks, evidence of the careful processing and attention to detail that defines this blend.
The smoking journey begins with grassy, raisin notes accompanied by bright touches of lemon zest. As the bowl progresses, earthy undertones emerge alongside intensified sweetness reminiscent of caramelized sugar. The rum essence weaves throughout, providing subtle spiciness that distinguishes this blend from standard Virginia offerings while maintaining the smoothness Virginia enthusiasts expect.
Opening the tin releases rich aromas of raisins and chocolate, with quality rum prominently featured in the bouquet. This tobacco performs exceptionally across various pipe shapes and sizes, though seasoned briar bowls particularly showcase the rum flavoring’s nuances. The flakes break apart easily for customized packing preferences, whether you prefer rubbed out, fold and stuff, or cube cut methods.
What sets Special Brown Flake apart is its remarkable consistency throughout the smoke. Even with enthusiastic puffing, the tobacco remains cool and dry, burning steadily to a fine white ash without the moisture buildup common in lesser Virginia blends. This technical excellence, combined with the complexity of flavors, makes it suitable for both casual enjoyment and contemplative smoking sessions where nuance matters.

Is Fribourg & Treyer Special Brown Flake suitable for beginners?
While approachable, this blend works best for pipe smokers with some experience. The medium strength and complex flavor profile benefit from proper packing and smoking technique to fully appreciate the rum casing and Virginia nuances.
How should I prepare the flakes for smoking?
The flakes arrive ready to smoke without drying. You can fold and stuff them whole, rub them out completely, or break them into small pieces. Each method produces slightly different burning characteristics, so experiment to find your preference.
What type of pipe works best with this tobacco?
Special Brown Flake performs well in most pipe shapes, though medium to large bowls allow the flavors to develop fully. Well-seasoned briar pipes particularly enhance the rum notes, while virgin bowls let you taste the pure Virginia character.
How does the rum casing affect the flavor?
The rum adds subtle spiciness and depth without dominating the Virginia base. It enhances rather than masks the tobacco’s natural sweetness, creating additional complexity that evolves throughout the bowl.
What distinguishes this from other Virginia flakes?
The combination of premium Virginia leaf quality, expert rum casing application, and centuries of blending tradition creates a uniquely balanced smoke. The consistency from light to finish and the complete combustion to white ash demonstrate superior processing.
How should I store an opened tin?
The square tin design provides excellent seal integrity. Simply press the lid firmly after each use. For longer storage, transfer to a mason jar or tobacco jar with tight seal to maintain the optimal moisture level and preserve the rum essence.
What is the room note like?
The room note combines pleasant tobacco sweetness with hints of rum and chocolate. Most non-smokers find it agreeable, making this suitable for indoor smoking where permitted or outdoor gatherings.
Is this tobacco available year-round?
Special Brown Flake is part of the regular Fribourg & Treyer line. However, availability can vary based on production schedules and demand, so purchasing multiple tins when available ensures you maintain your cellar stock.

This is my favorite pipe tobacco of all time. Yes, the seemingly unremarkable -but perfectly crafted Flake. It was one of the first nonaromatic tobaccos I ever tried. Since then, I have smoked tins of easily over 50 different blends from every kind of blending style I could find. I always come back to this wonderfully consistent straight Virginia flake .

Sharp, fermented bread notes from the tin. All the flavors under the rainbow once lit. If you can’t find this in stock I suggest Wessex Brown Flake. It’s very similar.
