Java Red by Drew Estate
Java Red emerges from a unique partnership between Rocky Patel and Drew Estate, two of the cigar industry’s most recognizable names. Handcrafted at Drew Estate’s celebrated Estelà factory, this box-pressed cigar features a dark, oily Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all enhanced with a sweet cherry infusion. The result is a dessert-inspired experience that bridges the gap between traditional and flavored cigars, making it an intriguing choice for adventurous palates and those who appreciate innovation in premium tobacco.

Flavor Experience
The pre-light aroma presents a bold wave of candied cherry and toasted cocoa, followed by earth and subtle spice when examined closely. Lighting up, the cigar opens with an interplay of dark chocolate, sweet cherry, and a backdrop of roasted coffee beans. The cherry presence is prominent but never overpowering, especially once the initial sweetness from the cap fades. As the smoke progresses, you’ll find increasing notes of pepper, charred wood, and creamy espresso lingering between puffs. The second third of the cigar maintains its core sweetness and old-fashioned soda shop character, while background spice gradually intensifies. The final portion shifts to more cocoa, toast, and a mellow reduction of the overt cherry flavor, finishing clean and never cloying. Most sizes offer between 45 minutes and an hour of steady, aromatic smoking.

What Makes the Java Red Unique?
Java Red stands out for its pronounced cherry infusion, artisanal construction, and the balance between flavor and tradition. Unlike many overly sweet or one-dimensional infused cigars, Java Red retains natural tobacco character—a result of carefully curated Nicaraguan fillers and the iconic Broadleaf wrapper. The partnership that brings together Drew Estate’s pioneering flavor expertise and Rocky Patel’s distribution muscle ensures a smoking experience unavailable elsewhere. Java Red is deliberately more robust than its Java Latte or Java Mint siblings, offering a richer, more cocoa-and-cherry profile that appeals to cigar enthusiasts open to experimentation.
Who Will Enjoy This Cigar?
This cigar is a top pick for those who enjoy dessert-like flavor profiles, chocolate-covered cherries, or classic soda shop treats. It bridges the gap for traditionalists seeking a change of pace and for flavored cigar fans who want complexity and a stronger tobacco character. Java Red pairs well with stout beer, bourbon, or espresso, making it suitable for after-dinner relaxation or as a unique offering at gatherings where aroma matters as much as taste.
What Flavor Notes Stand Out?
Expect a core of sweet cherry, dark chocolate, espresso, and cream with supporting notes of pepper and cedar. Each third develops its own character—the opening is sweet and lively, the middle brings richer chocolate and spice, and the final third settles into a creamy, slightly earthy finish without harshness.
How Does Construction Affect the Experience?
The box press makes Java Red comfortable to hold and helps ensure an even burn, though the infused nature may require a touch-up or two in the final third. Ash holds well for an inch or more, and the draw remains consistent thanks to Drew Estate’s quality standards. The Broadleaf wrapper’s natural oiliness helps it burn slowly and delivers a mouth-coating richness.
How Do Java Red, Java Latte, and Java Mint Compare?
Java Red is the boldest, delivering pronounced cherry and dark chocolate. Java Latte goes lighter, with creamy and powdered-sugar coffee notes, thanks to its Connecticut Shade wrapper. Java Mint uses a Brazilian Maduro wrapper and a refreshing mint infusion for an entirely different character. Choose Java Red for a richer, more decadent profile when you want something with heft and complexity.
What Should I Pair Java Red With?
This cigar works beautifully with espresso, aged rum, wheated bourbon, or creamy stouts. Pairings that highlight chocolate, vanilla, or cherry notes will harmonize with the cigar, while avoiding dry white wines or crisp lagers that can clash with the infused profile. For non-alcoholic options, try chocolate milk or spiced chai.

This isn’t nearly as sweet as the other Javas, which I appreciate, but it still doesn’t taste very good. The pack was very soft and it burned pretty wonky, and I tossed it at the halfway mark. I know a lot of people love Javas, but the infused world is not for me.
