A Legendary Smoke Reborn from a Century of Tradition
Step back in time with the La Aurora Preferidos 1903 Edition, a super-premium line that pays homage to the very first cigars crafted by the Dominican Republic’s oldest factory. Each cigar is a work of art, presented in the iconic double-tapered perfecto shape that was a hallmark of the company’s inception in 1903. To honor this legacy, only the most experienced artisans, with over 15 years at the rolling table, are entrusted with crafting these limited-production masterpieces.
The Preferidos line is a “treasure chest” of flavors, with each color-coded tube representing a different, exquisite wrapper leaf aged to perfection in oak casks. This patient aging process imparts layers of complexity and a refined smoothness to every blend. While the core tobaccos often feature a rich mix from the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Cameroon, and Nicaragua, the wrapper is the star of each unique edition, offering a distinct and memorable smoking experience.
A Spectrum of Six Exquisite Blends
The La Aurora Preferidos collection offers a journey through the world’s finest tobaccos, with each wrapper providing a unique flavor profile:
- Sapphire (Ecuadorian Connecticut): A mild to medium-bodied smoke that is creamy and smooth. It delivers delightful notes of coffee, nuts, sweet cedar, and a hint of spice.
- Gold (Dominican Corojo): This medium-bodied cigar is spicy and aromatic, with a profile of cedar, coffee, caramel, and a touch of citrus.
- Platinum (Cameroon): A rich and complex medium-bodied smoke, offering a nutty and creamy profile with nuances of cinnamon, cocoa, and sweet spice.
- Ruby (Brazilian Maduro): A medium to full-bodied experience with deep, rich flavors of dark chocolate, espresso, and earthy spices.
- Diamond (Connecticut Broadleaf): Bold and flavorful, this medium to full-bodied cigar has a core of earth, wood, and licorice, with sweeter notes of almond and cacao.
- Emerald (Ecuadorian Sun-Grown): This medium to full-bodied blend is earthy and oaky, with undertones of leather, cinnamon, and a developing raisin sweetness.

I had never heard of these before, but when I saw they were the oldest Dominican factory out there, I had to try some – I ordered a box of the Gold series, since I am partial to Dominican wrapper leaf. Construction is quality – some visible veins, and inspecting a few revealed a couple of caps that were a tiny bit untidy, but overall, these are springy and oily-looking cigars. Lighting one up, and I’m struck by the similarity to Davidoff, especially the Anniversario series – you get the coffee and cream, but with a spicier note, backed up by a nutty core and a long (long) finish. The flavours are clear, distinhguishable, and linear – there isn’t much transition since it’s so short, but it’s just so good that this really doesn’t matter. I’d encourage anyone to buy a box – these are stellar, top-tier cigars.
