Detailed Description
The 1926 Serie No. 48 Maduro represents a confluence of anniversaries and excellence, originally created in 2016 as an exclusive for the Tobacconists’ Association of America’s 48th anniversary before joining the permanent 1926 lineup due to overwhelming demand. This substantial gordo format emerged from the Padron family’s desire to showcase their legendary blend in a wider ring gauge without sacrificing intensity or complexity. Despite expectations that the 60 ring gauge might dilute the blend’s character, the No. 48 delivers even bolder flavors than many smaller vitolas in the line, proving the Padron family’s masterful ability to scale their blends while preserving every desirable quality.
Upon lighting, this box-pressed powerhouse unleashes waves of dense cocoa that resemble liquid dark chocolate, immediately establishing its reputation as one of the most intense expressions in the 1926 Serie. The opening draws combine this chocolate foundation with chewy vanilla nougat notes and robust espresso, creating a dessert-like richness that captivates from the first puff. As the cigar develops, layers of almond and honey emerge alongside subtle green tea undertones, while bursts of dried black cherry provide fruity contrast to the dominant cocoa character. The retrohale delivers controlled white pepper and additional cedar notes that enhance rather than overwhelm the primary flavors.
Construction excellence defines every aspect of the No. 48 Maduro, from the flawless box-pressing that maintains shape despite the substantial ring gauge to the razor-sharp burn line that requires minimal correction. The dark maduro wrapper displays an almost chocolate bar appearance with exceptional oils and minimal veining. While some reviewers note a slightly faster burn rate typical of larger ring gauges, the draw resistance remains perfectly calibrated, producing thick, luxuriously textured smoke that coats the palate with lingering chocolate and espresso notes. The ash forms solid and white with a salt-and-pepper appearance, often holding for well over an inch before cleanly releasing.

What makes the Padron 1926 No. 48 Maduro exceptional?
The No. 48 Maduro earned the No. 2 Cigar of the Year 2023 with a 96-point rating through its ability to amplify the 1926 Serie’s character in a 60 ring gauge format without dilution. This box-pressed gordo delivers unprecedented intensity with dense cocoa, vanilla nougat, and black cherry notes that create chocolate bar-like richness. The five-year aged tobacco provides exceptional smoothness despite the full-bodied power, making it one of the boldest yet most balanced offerings in Padron’s entire portfolio.
How does the No. 48 compare to other 1926 sizes?
The No. 48 delivers more intense, concentrated flavors than many smaller 1926 vitolas despite its larger ring gauge. Compared to the celebrated No. 9, it offers similar power but with enhanced chocolate richness and longer smoking duration. While the No. 2 provides more refined elegance, the No. 48 brings everything to maximum volume with what reviewers describe as an amplifier that goes to 11. Perfect for those seeking the boldest expression of the 1926 blend.
Is the No. 48 Maduro suitable for beginners?
The combination of full body, intense flavors, and substantial ring gauge makes the No. 48 Maduro challenging for newcomers. This powerhouse demands respect and experience to properly appreciate its complexity without being overwhelmed. Reviewers consistently describe it as a brute in the most positive sense, requiring seasoned palates that can handle boatloads of dark chocolate and espresso intensity. Beginners should develop their tolerance with milder Padron offerings before attempting this beast.
What beverages pair best with the No. 48 Maduro?
This intense gordo pairs magnificently with cask-strength bourbon or aged scotch that matches its power and chocolate richness. Port wine complements the black cherry notes while aged rum enhances the vanilla nougat sweetness. Espresso or Turkish coffee amplifies the roasted characteristics perfectly. For unique pairings, try imperial stouts that echo the chocolate intensity or mezcal whose smokiness creates intriguing contrast with the cocoa sweetness.
When should I smoke the No. 48 Maduro?
Set aside at least 90 minutes for this substantial cigar that demands dedicated attention. The full strength and intense flavors work best after hearty dinners when you can focus entirely on the experience. Perfect for milestone celebrations, entertaining fellow aficionados who appreciate bold cigars, or solitary contemplation when you want maximum impact. Reviewers consistently note this cigar melts worries away during its extended smoking session.
How does the No. 48 compare to the Natural version?
While the Natural offers more dialed-back refinement with subtle spice and citrus notes, the Maduro version delivers significantly bolder intensity with pronounced chocolate, espresso, and black cherry characteristics. The Maduro wrapper adds density and richness that transforms the blend into what many consider the most powerful expression in the 1926 line. Choose the Natural for daytime enjoyment and the Maduro when you want maximum chocolate decadence.
How should I store Padron 1926 No. 48 cigars?
Maintain 65-68% humidity and 68-70°F temperature for optimal preservation of these premium cigars. The oily maduro wrapper benefits from slightly lower humidity to prevent over-humidification that could affect burn quality. The 10-count boxes provide excellent storage but transfer to a humidor for long-term aging. Allow newly purchased cigars minimum two weeks rest before smoking. These age beautifully, developing additional sweetness and complexity over years of proper cellaring.
Why do reviewers call the No. 48 a brute or beast?
Reviewers affectionately describe the No. 48 as a brute or beast due to its extraordinary power and intensity that exceeds most other 1926 vitolas. One reviewer noted if Godzilla smoked cigars, he’d choose the No. 48 Maduro. This characterization reflects the cigar’s ability to deliver boatloads of flavor with full-bodied strength that demands respect. Despite these powerful descriptors, reviewers emphasize this intensity comes with perfect balance and smoothness that defines Padron’s expertise.

I love that the size of the different Padrons within a line really affect the cigar so much. The 48 is one of the most powerful 26s, outside of the no. 90’s, but I think it’s more balanced. Absolutely fantastic cigar.

This 48 is a brute, and I mean that in the most positive sense! Set aside at least an hour and a half and prepare to be blown away! Everything that makes the 1926 line so special, but with the 48 it’s there in spades…this amplifier goes to 11. Boatloads of dark chocolate, dark roasted espresso, with hints of allspice and caramel; this beauty has it all. Thick, luxuriously textured smoke, with great depth of flavor. Full bodied and intense; if Godzilla smoked cigars, he’d probably choose the Padron 1926 Anniversary No. 48 Maduro!
