Per Jensen Pipe Tobacco Sampler
Build your own sampler from the Per G. Jensen Legacy Collection, a series of four distinctive Danish American pipe tobacco blends created by master blender Per Jensen and manufactured by Cornell & Diehl in Loris, South Carolina. Per Jensen spent 22 years as a blender at Mac Baren, where he created the acclaimed HH line (HH Vintage Syrian, HH Old Dark Fired, HH Latakia Flake, HH Burley Flake, HH Pure Virginia, HH Bold Kentucky, and HH Acadian Perique). When Mac Baren was acquired by Scandinavian Tobacco Group, Per partnered with Cornell & Diehl and Jeremy Reeves to launch his own Legacy Collection, four blends inspired by the life and smoking preferences of his father, Per Georg Jensen, a Danish Navy veteran who served 30 years at the Copenhagen Harbour Authorities while building Georg Jensen Pipes by day. Jim Amash (JimInks) reviewed all four blends and awarded three of them his highest rating of four out of four stars. All four are regular production.

Brothers in Arms
A rich, full bodied blend of Dark Fired Kentucky, Saint James Perique, Turkish Orientals, Red Virginias, and Burley. This is the boldest blend in the Legacy Collection. The Perique leads with “lightly sweet and rather sour dried plums, dried figs, spice, floralness, bread, earth, wood, light dried raisins, and smoked mesquite,” while the Dark Fired Kentucky co leads with “earth, wood, spice, smoke, barbecue/mesquite, herbs, vegetation, floralness, toast, sourness, some nuts, and mild sweetness.” The Turkish Orientals add incense, buttery sweetness, and herbal complexity. Jim Amash gave it four out of four stars and described it as a “sweet and sour, floral, smoky, fruity, spicy, herbal, mild barbecue, nutty complex” blend. The Pipe Nook described it as “layered with decadent notes of cocoa and smoky spice.” Ribbon cut. Strength is filling (a step past medium to strong). Burns cool and clean. Will ghost a briar. Not an all day smoke. Best in a medium size round bowl to capture both the obvious and subtle complexities.
- Components: Dark Fired Kentucky, Saint James Perique, Turkish Orientals, Red Virginias, Burley
- Cut: Ribbon
- Strength: Medium to Strong (filling)
- Taste: Full
- Jim Amash Rating: 4 / 4
- Core Flavors: Dried plums, dried figs, smoked mesquite, barbecue, earth, wood, spice, herbs, incense, nuts, floralness, toast, sourness, cocoa, buttery sweetness, bread, raisins, citrus, cream
Port Guardian
A Danish style Red Virginia flake with “a deep natural sweetness and notes of dark citrus and zesty spice.” Per Jensen wrote personally about this blend: “I sincerely hope you enjoy this delicious Red Virginia blend inspired by one of my father’s favorite mixtures.” The front label features a photograph of Per Georg Jensen in uniform during his 30 year tenure at the Copenhagen Harbour Authorities. The handwritten text on the label is a note from King Frederik IX of Denmark, thanking Per’s father for the pipes he sent for the King’s birthday. Jim Amash found “a wealth of tart and tangy citrus, grass, bread, sugar, floralness, some vegetation, spice, mild dark fruits, sour lemon, earth, wood, and touches of vinegar, cream and acidity” from the various grades of Red Virginias. He awarded it four out of four stars and noted it “burns cool, clean and a little slow with a very consistent flavor.” Broken flake cut that easily separates to suit your preference. Medium strength. Can be an all day smoke.
- Components: Various grades of Red Virginia
- Cut: Broken Flake
- Strength: Medium
- Taste: Medium
- Jim Amash Rating: 4 / 4
- Core Flavors: Tart citrus, dark citrus, grass, bread, sugar, floralness, vegetation, spice, dark fruits, sour lemon, earth, wood, vinegar, cream, acidity, zesty spice
King’s Watch
A Danish style Bright Virginia flake with “natural toasted sweetness and bright, crisp citrus notes.” This is the lightest and most approachable blend in the Legacy Collection. Jim Amash found “an abundance of tart and tangy citrus, grass, toast, sugar, floralness, spice, mild vegetation, sour lemon, and a touch of acidity” from the bright and darker gold Virginias. He detected “a light sugary citrus” that “seems to be a casing,” adding a gentle sweetness that enhances the natural Virginia character. Four out of four stars. Medium strength with a nic hit well below medium, making it the gentlest blend in the collection on nicotine. The mildly moist broken flakes need no dry time. Burns cool, clean, and slightly slow. Can be an all day smoke. The sweet room note is fairly pleasant.

- Cut: Broken Flake
- Strength: Medium
- Taste: Medium
- Jim Amash Rating: 4 / 4
- Core Flavors: Tart citrus, toast, sugar, floralness, spice, grass, vegetation, sour lemon, acidity, sugary citrus sweetness
Harbour Dreams
An aromatic, ready rubbed mixture of aged Burley and Virginia tobaccos with chocolate and almond flavoring. This is the only aromatic in the Legacy Collection. The Pipe Nook noted that “while it smells like an aromatic in the tin, it performs less like one in the pipe,” reflecting Per Jensen’s Danish style approach where the tobacco character shines through the topping rather than being masked by it. Jim Amash identified the aged white Burley as the lead component, delivering “nuts, earth, wood, bread, some sour, bitter sharpness, floralness, spice, mild sugar, cocoa, and a touch of anise and molasses.” The Virginias support with “tart and tangy citrus, grass, bread, sugar, floralness, spice, vegetation, sour lemon, and light acidity.” He called it “deeply rich” with “a very consistent nutty, sweet and bitterly sour, floral, spicy, fruity, mildly acidic, rather zesty flavor.” Two and a half out of four stars, with a recommendation for moderate puffing cadence to avoid a harsh note. Ready rubbed cut. Strength is a couple steps past medium to strong. Not an all day smoke but it is repeatable.

- Cut: Ready Rubbed
- Strength: Medium to Strong

Per Jensen: from Georg Jensen Pipes to Mac Baren to Cornell & Diehl
Per Jensen’s family is royalty in the pipe smoking world. His father, Per Georg Jensen, was a Danish Navy veteran who served at the Copenhagen Harbour Authorities for 30 years. While working night shifts at the port, the elder Jensen built pipes during the day, founding Georg Jensen Pipes in 1954. The pipes earned recognition at the highest levels: King Frederik IX of Denmark personally thanked Per Georg Jensen with a handwritten note for the pipes sent for the King’s birthday. Per grew up working alongside his father from the age of 9. After his father’s passing, Per and his family continued the Georg Jensen brand for another 23 years before selling it in 2001.
Per then spent 22 years at Mac Baren as a master blender, where he created the HH (Hogshead House) line, widely regarded as some of the finest pipe tobaccos produced in the modern era. The HH blends (Vintage Syrian, Old Dark Fired, Latakia Flake, Burley Flake, Pure Virginia, Bold Kentucky, and Acadian Perique) earned devoted followings among pipe smokers worldwide. When Mac Baren acquired Sutliff, Per created several Sutliff blends including the Pipe Force collection. After Scandinavian Tobacco Group acquired both Mac Baren and Sutliff, Per found a new creative home at Cornell & Diehl, partnering with Head Blender Jeremy Reeves to launch the Legacy Collection in September 2025. Each blend in the collection honors Per Georg Jensen’s life: Port Guardian features his father’s photograph in uniform, Brothers in Arms reflects the camaraderie of his father’s naval service, King’s Watch references the royal connection to the Danish monarchy, and Harbour Dreams evokes the Copenhagen harbor where his father spent three decades.
Cornell & Diehl manufacturing
All four Legacy Collection blends are manufactured by Cornell & Diehl at their factory in Loris, South Carolina. C&D is one of America’s most respected pipe tobacco manufacturers, known for small batch production, careful tobacco sourcing, and hand crafted blending. The partnership between Per Jensen and C&D was confirmed by Jim Amash as regular production, meaning these blends will remain available on an ongoing basis rather than as limited editions. Laudisi Distribution Group (C&D’s parent company) handles distribution. The blends were announced in August 2025 and went on sale September 2, 2025, generating strong demand and positive reception from the pipe smoking community. Community member folkleaf on Pipes Magazine wrote: “I’ve now tried all of these except Harbor Dreams and they are just fantastic. So happy to have these in regular production.”
How to choose your sampler
- If you prefer bold, complex blends with Perique and Dark Fired: Start with Brothers in Arms. It is the most flavorful and strongest blend in the collection. The dried fruit, barbecue smoke, and Oriental incense create a layered experience unlike anything else in C&D’s portfolio. Pair with bourbon, stout, or strong black coffee.
- If you prefer straight Virginia flakes: Start with Port Guardian (Red Virginia, darker, richer, more earth and vinegar) or King’s Watch (Bright Virginia, lighter, toastier, more citrus). Port Guardian is the one Per Jensen personally connected to his father’s favorite mixture. King’s Watch is the most approachable and gentlest on nicotine. Both received four out of four stars from Jim Amash. Pair with tea, medium roast coffee, or a nut brown ale.
- If you prefer aromatics: Harbour Dreams is the only aromatic in the collection. Per Jensen’s Danish style means the tobacco character comes through the chocolate and almond topping rather than being buried by it. This is not a drugstore aromatic. The aged Burley base delivers genuine nuts, earth, and cocoa alongside the flavoring. Pair with hot chocolate, latte, or cream soda.
- If you want to experience the full collection: Select all four. The range from mild Bright Virginia flake (King’s Watch) to bold Dark Fired and Perique blend (Brothers in Arms) covers nearly the entire spectrum of pipe tobacco styles. Smoking them in order from lightest to boldest (King’s Watch, Port Guardian, Harbour Dreams, Brothers in Arms) gives you a natural progression through Per Jensen’s creative range.

What is the Per G. Jensen Legacy Collection?
Four Danish American pipe tobacco blends created by master blender Per Jensen and manufactured by Cornell & Diehl. Inspired by the life and smoking preferences of Per’s father, Per Georg Jensen, a Danish Navy veteran and pipe maker (Georg Jensen Pipes, est. 1954). Per spent 22 years as a blender at Mac Baren, creating the acclaimed HH line, before partnering with Cornell & Diehl. All four blends are regular production. Released September 2, 2025.
Who is Per Jensen?
A master pipe tobacco blender. Grew up working alongside his father in the Georg Jensen pipe making workshop from age 9. Spent 22 years at Mac Baren, where he created the HH line (Vintage Syrian, Old Dark Fired, Latakia Flake, Burley Flake, Pure Virginia, Bold Kentucky, Acadian Perique). Also created blends for Sutliff including the Pipe Force collection. Now partnered with Cornell & Diehl for the Legacy Collection.
Which blend should I try first?
Depends on your preferences. Brothers in Arms for bold, smoky, complex flavors (Dark Fired Kentucky, Perique, Orientals). Port Guardian for a rich Red Virginia flake with dark citrus and zesty spice. King’s Watch for a light, bright Bright Virginia flake with toast and citrus. Harbour Dreams for a Danish style aromatic with chocolate and almond over aged Burley. Jim Amash gave Brothers in Arms, Port Guardian, and King’s Watch four out of four stars each.
Are these limited edition?
No. Jim Amash confirmed all four blends are regular production. They will remain available on an ongoing basis through Cornell & Diehl and authorized retailers.
What did Per Jensen create at Mac Baren?
The HH (Hogshead House) line: HH Vintage Syrian, HH Old Dark Fired, HH Latakia Flake, HH Burley Flake, HH Pure Virginia, HH Bold Kentucky, and HH Acadian Perique. What is the connection to King Frederik IX?
Per Jensen’s father, Per Georg Jensen, made pipes that reached the Danish royal court. King Frederik IX of Denmark personally thanked Per Georg Jensen with a handwritten note for the pipes sent for the King’s birthday. That handwritten note is reproduced on the label of Port Guardian, the Red Virginia flake blend in the Legacy Collection.
What is the story behind each blend name?
Port Guardian references Per Georg Jensen’s 30 year career at the Copenhagen Harbour Authorities (port guardian). King’s Watch honors the connection to King Frederik IX. Brothers in Arms reflects the camaraderie of naval service. Harbour Dreams evokes the Copenhagen harbor where Per’s father spent decades. Each label features personal elements from the Jensen family history.
What are the strength levels?
King’s Watch is the mildest (medium strength, low nicotine). Port Guardian is medium. Harbour Dreams is medium to strong. Brothers in Arms is the strongest (filling, past medium to strong). From lightest to boldest: King’s Watch, Port Guardian, Harbour Dreams, Brothers in Arms.
