Tatuaje Black Label Petit Lancero
Pete Johnson didn’t inherit his place in the cigar industry. He earned it smoking thousands of cigars while working retail at Gus’ Smoke Shop and The Grand Havana Room in Beverly Hills. During a trip to Cuba, he smoked a farm-rolled cigar that rewired his understanding of what tobacco could deliver. That experience became the foundation for his Tatuaje Black Label line, a blend he initially kept entirely for himself before releasing it to the public. The Petit Lancero vitola claimed the No. 3 spot on Cigar Aficionado’s 2025 Top 25 list with a 96 rating, the highest ranking any Tatuaje has ever achieved in the publication’s history.

My Father Cigars S.A. in Nicaragua produces every Tatuaje Black Label Petit Lancero using tobaccos sourced entirely from Nicaraguan farms. The Garcia family oversees manufacturing for all Tatuaje lines, bringing decades of rolling expertise to each cigar. The 6 x 38 dimensions create a focused smoking experience where the narrow ring gauge amplifies the interaction between wrapper, binder, and filler tobaccos.
The wrapper shows a dark, oily surface with minimal veining and a firm, consistent feel when squeezed. Aromas from the wrapper reveal aged cedar, barnyard, dark chocolate, leather tack, and earth. The foot presents toasted bread, cocoa nibs, black pepper, espresso, and a subtle cherry sweetness. Cold draw resistance sits in the ideal range, delivering peanut shells, oak, and coffee beans before lighting.
From first light, the Petit Lancero opens with oak tannins and dark earth as primary notes. Secondary flavors include creamy cedar, black pepper, cocoa, toasted bread, and periodic waves of cherry sweetness. Retrohale brings white pepper, nutmeg, and charred oak. Strength begins at solid medium, while body and flavor intensity register at medium-plus. The burn line tracks evenly, ash holds for nearly an inch, and smoke production remains dense.
The second third introduces coffee bean notes that pair with the existing oak and earth foundation. Peanut butter emerges alongside leather, cinnamon, and dark chocolate. The cherry sweetness intensifies, creating moments that recall s’mores around a campfire. Retrohale becomes fuller with cardamom joining the pepper mix. Strength climbs to medium-full territory, body matches that progression, and flavor intensity peaks. Construction continues without correction needs.
Final third flavors shift toward espresso, gritty earth, and aged cedar while maintaining the oak backbone. The sweetness pulls back slightly, allowing leather tack and mushroom notes to surface. Peanut shells return with toasted spice and a varnish edge. Retrohale delivers concentrated pepper and wood tannins. Strength holds at medium-full, body stays consistent, and flavor intensity remains elevated through the last inch. Total smoke time runs approximately 50 minutes with cool, flavorful draws until the end.

What makes the Tatuaje Black Label different from other Tatuaje lines?
Pete Johnson created the Black Label based on a farm-rolled Cuban cigar he smoked years ago. He originally kept the entire production for himself before releasing it publicly. The blend uses entirely Nicaraguan tobacco and delivers a darker, more tannic flavor profile compared to other Tatuaje offerings.
How long does the Petit Lancero vitola take to smoke?
The 6 x 38 format typically smokes for 45 to 60 minutes depending on your pace. The smaller ring gauge concentrates flavors while keeping the session length manageable for shorter smoking windows.
What flavor notes should I expect from this cigar?
Primary flavors include oak tannins, dark earth, and coffee beans. Secondary notes bring cherry sweetness, cocoa, black pepper, peanut butter, leather, and toasted bread. The sweetness has been compared to s’mores around a campfire.
Who manufactures Tatuaje Black Label cigars?
My Father Cigars S.A. in Nicaragua rolls all Tatuaje cigars, including the Black Label line. The Garcia family oversees production at their factory using traditional Cuban rolling techniques.
Is this cigar suitable for beginners?
The medium to medium-full strength makes this accessible for smokers with some experience, but the complexity and refined flavor delivery can overwhelm complete beginners. Those comfortable with medium-bodied cigars will find this approachable.
What drinks pair well with the Tatuaje Black Label Petit Lancero?
Espresso matches the coffee and cocoa notes while cutting through the oak tannins. Bourbon or rye whiskey complements the sweet and spicy characteristics. Dark rum brings out the cherry sweetness and toasted bread flavors.
Why did this cigar rank so high on Cigar Aficionado’s 2025 list?
The 96 rating and No. 3 placement represent the highest ranking any Tatuaje has received in the publication’s Top 25 history. Reviewers highlighted the enormous flavor delivery from such a small format and the balanced interplay between sweetness and tannins.
How should I store Tatuaje Black Label Petit Lanceros?
Maintain 65 to 70 percent humidity and 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The Nicaraguan tobacco responds well to slightly lower humidity around 65 percent, which can sharpen flavors and prevent soft spots in the smaller ring gauge format.

Wish I wouldn’t have waited this long to try this. I love a good lancero but a shorter version is nice. This gave me a lot of solid flavors. Good woody notes with some toasted nuts and coffee. Nothing to complain on this stick. Tatuaje never disappoints for me. Construction was good and definitely smoke this again. Could see a short term age doing a little bit for this.

I am not a lancero fan at all, but these sticks are so tasty I make an exception.

Black label is one of my favorite core line tats. The blend shines in the smaller ring gauges imo. Cedar, baking spice, black pepper. Great daily smoke

Great little smoke. Woody, nutty, with a nice spice and citrus on the finish. Love the black labels.
