Casdagli Traditional Line Cotton Tail
The resurrection of a lost vitola speaks volumes about Jeremy Casdagli’s commitment to preserving cigar heritage. When I first encountered the Cotton Tail at a European trade show, Jeremy explained how this distinctive figurado shape had vanished from production floors since the 1950s, making its 2009 revival a testament to both historical preservation and modern craftsmanship. The collaboration with Hendrik Kelner Jr. at the Kelner Boutique Factory brings together generational expertise with innovative blending techniques, creating something that honors the past while appealing to contemporary palates.
- Unique figurado vitola (5″ x 52-64) revived after 60-year absence from cigar production
- Dominican Cotui wrapper sourced from Monika Kelner’s exclusive plantation yields naturally sweet characteristics
- International tobacco blend combines four countries: USA Pennsylvanian Broadleaf, Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Peruvian fillers
- Closed foot with signature pigtail cap ensures controlled lighting and even burn development
- Medium-full bodied profile delivers vanilla, cedar, coffee, oak, and smoked wood notes
- Kelner Family Reserve binder provides structural integrity for complex figurado construction
- Box count of 20 cigars packaged with 69% RH Boveda humidification
The Cotton Tail exemplifies what happens when traditional cigar-making techniques meet contemporary tobacco selection. Having spent considerable time with members of the Kelner family over the years, their dedication to maintaining consistent quality while experimenting with unconventional vitolas becomes apparent in every aspect of this cigar. The Dominican Cotui wrapper, cultivated by Hendrik’s sister Monika exclusively for the Kelner family operations, brings a distinctive sweetness that sets this blend apart from typical Dominican puros.
The engineering behind this figurado deserves recognition. The gradual taper from 64 ring gauge at the foot to 52 at the head creates varying burn temperatures throughout the smoking experience, allowing different tobacco components to express themselves as the ember progresses. This technical consideration, combined with the densely packed international filler blend, produces an evolving flavor journey that moves from initial notes of vanilla and cedar through coffee and oak, eventually developing pepper and smoked wood characteristics. The inclusion of Pennsylvanian Broadleaf in the filler adds depth and richness typically absent from purely Caribbean blends.
Construction quality remains consistent despite the challenging shape. The closed foot requires patience during lighting but rewards with concentrated initial flavors. The pigtail cap, while aesthetically pleasing, serves a practical purpose by securing the wrapper at the head where the dramatic taper creates potential stress points. Draw resistance typically stays moderate throughout, though the varying ring gauge naturally affects smoke volume. Burn performance generally self-corrects, though the unique shape occasionally requires minor touch-ups.

What makes the Cotton Tail vitola special?
The Cotton Tail represents a figurado shape that disappeared from production in the 1950s. Its unique 5-inch length with dramatic taper from 64 to 52 ring gauge creates varying burn temperatures, allowing different tobacco components to shine throughout the smoking experience. The closed foot and pigtail cap add both visual appeal and functional benefits for controlled lighting and wrapper security.
Who is Hendrik Kelner Jr. and why does his involvement matter?
Hendrik Kelner Jr. comes from one of the Dominican Republic’s most respected tobacco families. Son of master blender Henke Kelner, Hendrik brings generational expertise to the Casdagli blend. His access to exclusive tobaccos, including the Cotui wrapper grown by his sister Monika, ensures exceptional leaf quality unavailable to most manufacturers.
How does the Dominican Cotui wrapper affect flavor?
The Cotui wrapper, grown in one of the Dominican Republic’s most fertile regions near the Yuta River split, provides natural sweetness and complexity. This exclusive leaf, reserved for the Kelner family, contributes vanilla and caramel undertones while maintaining excellent combustion properties essential for the challenging figurado format.
What flavor progression should I expect?
The Cotton Tail opens with vanilla, cedar, and coffee notes. As you progress through the varying ring gauges, oak and pepper emerge, complemented by smoked wood characteristics. The Pennsylvanian Broadleaf in the filler adds earth and leather undertones, while the Peruvian tobacco contributes subtle spice. The creamy smoke texture remains consistent throughout.
How long does a Cotton Tail typically smoke?
Despite its 5-inch length, the figurado shape and dense packing create a smoking time comparable to larger vitolas. Most smokers report 75 to 90 minutes of enjoyment, with the varying ring gauge affecting burn rate throughout the experience. The closed foot requires additional lighting time initially.
Is special storage required for this unusual shape?
The Cotton Tail comes packaged with a 69% RH Boveda pack, ideal for maintaining the figurado’s complex construction. Store at 65-69% humidity to preserve the wrapper’s oils and prevent cracking at stress points. The tapered shape fits most humidors, though careful placement prevents damage to the pigtail cap.
What distinguishes Casdagli cigars from other premium brands?
Jeremy Casdagli focuses on reviving historical vitolas and blends while collaborating with elite tobacco families. The brand emphasizes limited production, exclusive tobacco sources, and meticulous construction standards. Each release represents careful curation rather than mass production, appealing to collectors seeking unique smoking experiences.
How does the four-country filler blend work together?
The international filler creates layers of complexity rarely found in single-origin cigars. Dominican tobacco provides smoothness and natural sweetness, Nicaraguan leaf adds spice and body, USA Pennsylvanian Broadleaf contributes richness and depth, while Peruvian tobacco offers unique aromatic qualities. This careful balance evolves as the figurado shape changes the combustion dynamics.

Casdagli continues to impress. This cigar burns a lot longer than I expected which is a good thing when something is this delicious . Flavours were great and construction was good, especially when considering the size and shape. Overall an extremely enjoyable cigar.

One of my favorite cigars, I make sure to gift this to people whenever I do a trade. Kelner complexity and balance, a fun vitola, and from Casdagli which is an exceptional brand. My favorite in their lineup.

Rich, complex, creamy journey of caramel, cocoa, coffee, malt balls, cinnamon (esp. last ½), and custard. Casdagli cigars need to sit for at least 6 months. I still have four left! They’re probably out of them, but should you see them for sale…buy a box whether you can afford them or not. I couldn’t, but I bought them anyway. So I eat Puffed Rice for awhile😄; they’re worth it!

The Casdagli Cotton Tail had a striking shape and flawless construction, which definitely caught my eye. Flavor-wise, I got a mix of oak, vanilla, and a smoky wood note that added some depth. It was smooth with just a touch of pepper. Overall, a good experience—but not one I’d rush back to but I would indeed smoke again.

I enjoyed this. But I think with some age this cigar will be a 4/5 star for me. Flavors were there but just not enough and that’s why I think it needs more rest. I look forward to smoking this again in a couple of months and another with in a year.
Notes of peanut shavings, white pepper, cedar, leather, subtle caramel sweetness.

The shape on this was very different but the flavors were spot on. Got those classic Casdagli flavors. Heavy grass, cedar and musty earthiness. The cigar smoked beautifully. Awesome construction. Perfect draw, burn and smoke output. Loved everything about this.

This a beautiful cigar, it looks great and the construction is on point but I didn’t like the shape, especially when I was smoking it, the draw and the burn line were not as great as I am used to from Casdagli but the flavors were delicious, very Cuban-like flavors, very creamy and a very nice note like cashew or Asian spices. But I do prefer the super belicoso in the Casdagli traditional Line.

Another amazing smoke show n the Traditional by Casdagli. I got sweet smoked paprika, vanilla custard, woodiness and Turkish coffee. This cigar was hitting all cylinders in the flavor department. I am not crazy about the size but I still get box of cotton tails because the flavors were that great!!!
