Illusione R Rothchildes: A Triumph of Taste and Tradition
Embrace the legacy of Illusione with the R Rothchildes, a cigar that epitomizes the brand’s dedication to resurrecting the distinguished taste profiles of Nicaragua’s pre-revolution era. Illusione, renowned for securing the #7 spot in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2007, introduces a creation that embodies the rich heritage and bold flavors of Nicaraguan tobacco.
Reviving a Rich Tobacco Legacy
Dion Giolito, the visionary behind Illusione, embarked on a quest to revive the robust and pristine flavors once produced in Nicaragua’s Jalapa Valley and Esteli region. Under the guidance of the legendary Arsenio Ramos and his team, the once-forgotten fields have been restored, yielding tobaccos of unmatched quality and character.
Craftsmanship and Quality
Each Illusione R Rothchildes is a testament to the brand’s commitment to excellence, produced in small batches at the esteemed Raices Cubanas factory. These cigars feature first-generation Corojo ’99 and Criollo ’98 seeds, encased in a top-grade Café Colorado wrapper and finished with a traditional triple cap, ensuring a smoking experience of rare quality and consistency.
A Profile of Complexity and Depth
The R Rothchildes, a 4 1/2 x 50 Petit Robusto/Rothschild, is a masterful blend of all Nicaraguan Aganorsa leaf filler and binder, beautifully encased in a Mexican San Andreas wrapper. Its rustic appearance, with a cocoa brown, marbled wrapper, hints at the complexity and depth of flavors within. Initially, it presents a spicy and unique floral note, which then transitions to a rich, earthy sweetness, characteristic of the Aganorsa leaf.
Affordable Luxury
Priced under $5, the Illusione R Rothchildes stands as a paragon of value, offering an exceptionally complex flavor profile that belies its modest cost. This cigar is not just a smoke; it’s a journey through the rich tapestry of Nicaraguan tobacco history, meticulously crafted to deliver satisfaction in every puff.
A Medium-Bodied Marvel
Residing comfortably in the medium body strength range, the Illusione R Rothchildes is an ideal choice for both novices and seasoned aficionados. Its rich, earthy flavors, combined with a subtle sweetness, make it a standout offering that’s hard to beat for the price.

I have to admit that I didn’t particularly love this cigar. This is probably my personal taste or perhaps I just smoked it a little too fast. The overall profile was light wood and spice with a sour component that I didn’t much like and also a little bitterness. The spiciness and pepper increased during the smoke. Win some, lose some, but that’s part of the experience trying different cigars.

I wanted to like this but for me the construction was a bit off. This cigar got hot. I wasn’t hot boxing it but it went out twice and burned really hot. The flavors I did get from it was white pepper and an earthy mineral note. I just wish the construction was a bit better. It was hard to keep this lit. I hope this is a one off since everything else I’ve tried from them has been solid.

This is a very paper forward, punchy little cigar. I find that if you don’t take your time smoking them they can become somewhat bitter, but if your patient they stay at a manageable level of spice and flavor. I know a lot of people love these, but they never hit me quite right. Construction was fine, but just a little spicier than I prefer without something to balance that spice out with.
