Oxford Jornal
The Oxford Jornal is a medium bodied Nicaraguan puro wrapped in a dark, deeply fermented Nicaraguan Oscuro leaf over a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long fillers, handcrafted in Nicaragua exclusively for Oxford Cigar Company. Every Jornal arrives wrapped in newspaper instead of cellophane, a traditional aging technique that promotes slow, natural flavor development by allowing the tobacco to breathe while protecting it from light and excessive humidity fluctuation. “Jornal” is Portuguese for “newspaper,” a nod to Oxford Cigar Company founder Lucas Da Silva’s Brazilian heritage. The newspaper wrapping is not a gimmick. It is how the cigar got its name, and it is the reason the Jornal smokes with a smoothness and integration that belies its price point. The Nicaraguan Oscuro wrapper is extra fermented and nearly black, delivering dark chocolate, espresso, earth, and a natural sweetness that coats every puff. Underneath, the all Nicaraguan binder and filler provide cedar, leather, nuts, pepper, caramel, and baking spice in a profile that starts creamy and sweet before building into a rich, complex, earthy finish. The initial Jornal shipment sold out in days, and demand has remained strong with every release since. Packaged in 25 count bundles.
- Nicaraguan Oscuro wrapper, extra fermented to a near black color, delivering dark chocolate, espresso, earth, and a natural sweetness that comes from the extended fermentation process unique to Oscuro leaf.
- Nicaraguan binder provides structural integrity and a peppery, earthy backbone that supports the bold Oscuro wrapper.
- Nicaraguan long filler creates a pure Nicaraguan puro with the depth, spice, and richness that Nicaraguan tobacco is celebrated for.
- Wrapped in newspaper instead of cellophane, a traditional aging technique that allows the tobacco to breathe, promotes slow flavor integration, and gives the Jornal its name and distinctive presentation.
- “Jornal” is Portuguese for “newspaper,” connecting the cigar’s unique presentation to founder Lucas Da Silva’s Brazilian roots.
- Oxford Cigar Company exclusive, available only through Oxford Cigar Company and not distributed to other retailers.
- Medium bodied with rich, full flavor, accessible enough for a wide range of smokers while delivering genuine complexity that exceeds expectations at its price point.
- Simply Stogies called the Jornal “an exceptional house blend” and described the smoke output as “nothing less than spectacular.”
Wrapped in newspaper, aged by tradition
The newspaper wrapping is the Jornal’s most visible distinction and its most important one. Most premium cigars arrive in cellophane or naked in a box. The Jornal arrives wrapped in newspaper, each cigar individually rolled in printed newsprint. Lucas Da Silva explained that the newspaper is used to promote aging. The porous paper allows air to circulate around the cigar slowly, letting the tobacco breathe and the oils in the Oscuro wrapper continue to develop, while still protecting the cigar from direct light and rapid humidity changes. The result is a cigar that has already begun a gentle post roll aging process by the time it reaches the smoker.
The technique is not new. Newspaper and unbleached paper have been used in tobacco storage for generations across Latin America and Europe, particularly for pipe tobaccos and cigars stored in bulk without individual tubes or cellophane. What makes the Jornal unique is that Oxford Cigar Company has made the technique a deliberate, branded element of the cigar’s identity. The newspaper is not just packaging. It is part of the process, part of the name, and part of the story.
The Nicaraguan Oscuro wrapper
Oscuro is the darkest grade of cigar wrapper leaf. It achieves its near black color through a combination of extended time on the tobacco stalk (allowing maximum sun exposure and oil development) and prolonged fermentation after harvest. Where a standard Nicaraguan Habano wrapper might ferment for weeks, an Oscuro wrapper ferments for months, with the extended process breaking down harsher compounds and concentrating the leaf’s natural sugars, oils, and darker flavor elements. The result is a wrapper that delivers dark chocolate, espresso, earth, and a syrupy natural sweetness without the bitterness or harshness that improperly fermented dark wrappers can produce.
The Jornal’s Nicaraguan Oscuro wrapper is visibly dark with a thick, oily texture, minimal veins, and a nearly black appearance that signals the depth of flavor waiting inside. Oscuro wrappers are more labor intensive and lower yielding than standard wrappers, as the extra fermentation time increases the risk of leaf damage and reduces the total usable output from each harvest. This makes Oscuro wrapped cigars inherently more exclusive, even at accessible price points.
Oxford Cigar Company
Oxford Cigar Company is a premium online cigar retailer founded in 2018 by Lucas Da Silva and headquartered in Orlando, Florida. The Oxford Jornal is the company’s signature house blend, developed exclusively for Oxford Cigar Company and available nowhere else. Lucas Da Silva’s Brazilian heritage runs through the brand’s identity: “Jornal” is the Portuguese word for newspaper, and the cigar’s presentation reflects a Latin American tradition of tobacco craftsmanship that values substance over flash. The Jornal has built a loyal following among Oxford Cigar Company customers who appreciate the combination of genuine quality, unique presentation, and value pricing.
Smoking experience
The Nicaraguan Oscuro wrapper is dark, nearly black, with visible oil, a thick texture, and a pungent, rich aroma. The newspaper wrapping imparts a faint newsprint scent that dissipates the moment it is removed. The pre light aroma from the wrapper presents cedar, barnyard, earth, and a depth that signals serious tobacco underneath. The foot adds a fruity sweetness that is intoxicating. The cold draw brings nuts, coffee, fruit, and a smooth, near perfect draw resistance.
The Jornal opens with a creamy, sweet character that is immediately disarming. Cedar and a light floral quality lead, and the Oscuro wrapper’s dark chocolate appears quickly, coating the palate with a rich, smooth sweetness. Cashews and a mild nuttiness sit alongside the chocolate, and the smoke output is enormous from the first puff. Thick, white, billowing clouds fill the air with every draw. The body reads medium, and the strength is mild to medium, smooth and approachable with no harshness or rough edges. The first third sets a tone of creamy, sweet, approachable quality that makes the Jornal immediately likeable.
The second third is where the Jornal hits its stride. Milk chocolate, cashews, and leather take the lead, and black pepper emerges as a compliment to the richness. Caramel joins with a buttery sweetness that adds a new dimension, and coffee weaves through the chocolate to create a mocha like quality. The smoke output remains spectacular, filling the mouth with copious amounts of creamy smoke on every draw. Cedar creeps in toward the end of the second third, hinting at the woodier, more complex finish to come. Construction is excellent: the ash is compact and grey, the burn line is consistent, and the draw remains effortless.
The final third shifts the profile from sweet and creamy to rich and earthy. Cedar, baking spices, and caramel open the closing act, with the wood taking a dominant position before being cut by the sweetness of the caramel. A rich coffee note lingers on the finish, morphing into a deeper espresso quality that overwhelms the earlier sweetness. Red pepper appears on the retrohale with a mild vegetable like quality. Earth and mineral notes push through, and a campfire quality emerges alongside charred wood. The interplay between the rich caramel sweetness and the bitter charred wood creates a finish that is almost intoxicating. Baking spices and sweet caramel linger on the palate long after the cigar is set down. Simply Stogies’ reviewer noted: “I wish I brought out my nubber. I do not want to put this cigar down.”
Why newspaper aging works
Cellophane is semi permeable, meaning it allows some air exchange while blocking most moisture transfer. Newspaper is fully porous, allowing significantly more air circulation around the cigar. This increased breathability means the tobaccos inside the Jornal continue to off gas and exchange moisture at a gentle rate after rolling, effectively extending the post production aging process. The newspaper also absorbs excess oils from the Oscuro wrapper’s surface, preventing the wrapper from becoming overly slick while allowing the oils to redistribute evenly over time. The trade off is that newspaper offers less protection against humidity swings than cellophane, which is why the Jornal should be transferred to a properly maintained humidor upon arrival and the newspaper removed or left in place based on personal preference.
Pairings
The Jornal’s chocolate, caramel, coffee, and cedar profile pairs naturally with a medium roast coffee, where the nutty and caramel qualities in the coffee mirror the cigar’s own sweet, creamy character. A cappuccino is an ideal morning pairing. For afternoon or evening, a brown ale or porter matches the chocolate and espresso notes beautifully. Bourbon with vanilla and caramel draws out the cigar’s baking spice and caramel sweetness, while dark rum complements the earthy, charred wood qualities of the final third. Sweet tea provides a refreshing counterpoint to the Jornal’s richness for smokers who prefer a lighter pairing.

What is the Oxford Jornal?
It is a medium bodied Nicaraguan puro with a Nicaraguan Oscuro wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and Nicaraguan fillers, handcrafted in Nicaragua exclusively for Oxford Cigar Company. Each cigar is wrapped in newspaper instead of cellophane to promote aging. “Jornal” is Portuguese for “newspaper,” a nod to founder Lucas Da Silva’s Brazilian heritage. Packaged in 25 count bundles.
What does the Oxford Jornal taste like?
The profile opens creamy and sweet with dark chocolate, cashews, and cedar. The middle brings milk chocolate, leather, black pepper, caramel, and coffee. The final third delivers espresso, baking spice, earth, mineral, campfire, charred wood, and a rich caramel sweetness. Simply Stogies called it “an exceptional house blend.”
Why is the Jornal wrapped in newspaper?
The newspaper wrapping promotes aging by allowing the tobacco to breathe while protecting it from light. The porous paper allows more air circulation than cellophane, enabling the tobaccos to continue off gassing and integrating after rolling. It is a traditional Latin American tobacco storage technique that Oxford Cigar Company has made a branded element of the cigar’s identity.
What does “Jornal” mean?
“Jornal” is Portuguese for “newspaper.” The name connects the cigar’s unique newspaper wrapping to founder Lucas Da Silva’s Brazilian heritage.
What is a Nicaraguan Oscuro wrapper?
Oscuro is the darkest grade of cigar wrapper leaf. It achieves its near black color through extended time on the tobacco stalk and prolonged fermentation after harvest. The extra fermentation concentrates natural sugars and oils, delivering dark chocolate, espresso, earth, and natural sweetness without bitterness.
Is the Oxford Jornal available at other retailers?
No. The Oxford Jornal is an exclusive house blend available only through Oxford Cigar Company. It is not distributed to other retailers.
Should I remove the newspaper before storing?
Transfer to a properly maintained humidor upon arrival. The newspaper can be removed or left in place based on personal preference. Leaving the newspaper on continues the gentle aging effect, while removing it allows the humidor’s environment to directly contact the wrapper.
What pairs well with the Oxford Jornal?
Medium roast coffee, cappuccino, brown ale, porter, bourbon with vanilla and caramel, dark rum, and sweet tea all complement the Jornal’s chocolate, caramel, coffee, cedar, and earthy profile.

I thought that the website’s self-rolled cigars would not be a pleasant experience for me, but it turns out I was wrong. I had the cigar for a few days before I tried it out. As it turns out, this cigar has a very smooth taste, with a toasty flavor and a slight sweetness, which is definitely a good value for money at this price point.

These newspaper-wrapped cigars are a treat to smoke at a fair price point. Definitely worth picking up a bundle and keeping on hand for an everyday smoke for a seasoned enthusiast, or a new cigar smoker looking to step up their game. Notes of leather and spice with a hint of black pepper is sure to please. Oxford makes these available to their customers because they know they’re solid smokes.

I have smoked through a handful of these and have enjoyed every single one. Burn and draw were great on each one. Flavors have been consistent with a nice nuttiness to start and a bit more earth and spice develops into the latter portions of the smoke, but always balanced. This has been more enjoyable and reliable than some bigger brand name sticks

Sold stick. The cigar I loved how it was rolled in the newspaper. Classic! Upon light up I’m getting a nuttiness, sweetness from the wrapper in dark brown sugar and slight cedar. This one the draw was a tad tight to my liking. The burn was exceptional and the smoke output was great. If I was buying this in a brick and mortar I’d have zero reservations paying $10-$12 for this. Once again Oxford provides an awesome smoke at an incredible price.

This cigar is an excellent example of a entry level cigar that packs a lot of flavor and excellent aroma. The price point on the cigar is what made me purchase a 5 pack. Great tight roll and has an excellent draw.

Not a bad cigar, but was little dry since it was only wrapped in newspaper and did not smoke very well. Maybe if sealed better.

The roll is very good, and the packaging is very distinctive. It may be because the storage time is not enough, which makes me feel that the pepper flavor of this cigar is very strong. I hope that time can make it softer, but at this price, it is also worth a try. cigars

Ordered one to try it since it has great reviews. A little disappointed, very dry and cracked. May have just been a bad one.

I don’t even want to use the term “for the proce” here. These are great smokes regardless of price point. I bought these based on previous reviews, and I do like trying out “house blends” but I wasn’t expecting such a great stick. Great flavor, damn near perfect draw, and burned evenly. You’d be crazy not to pick up a few of these.

Do not sleep on this cigar. Excellent smoke for an amazing price. While the seams on the wrapper are quite prominent it still has an attractive quality and the construction is bang on. Love the cute curly cap 🙂
Taste, draw and burn were all good, this stick definitely punches above it’s price class. Do yourself a favor and pick some up when they’re in stock, Oxford is on to something with these house blends!

This cigar punches way out of its weight class. Nutty and slightly sweet with some nice spice to the finish. If I didn’t know better I would think this was a twelve dollar robusto all day. Great deal.
