In 1848 Jose and Eusebio Alfonso, cousin. opened a small cigar factory in Santiago de Las Vegas, a province of Havana, Cuba, and created a cigar brand named Lord Bryon in honor of this world-renowned English poet. He was arguably the greatest author of romantic poetry of the day and more importantly pertaining to the brand, an avid cigar smoker and enthusiast. Some researchers say “Lord Byron became the first cigar brand to adorn a lithographed cigar band and label with the name on it”. More than eighty years, in the 1930s, The Great Depression hits, and Lord Byron cigars were gone, but not forever. Now…150 years later the original owners’ great-great-great-grandson Nelson Alfonso recovered again the Byron brand name in 1998. Flavor notes consist of hints of raisin, spices, apricot, and caramel.

Very full favor with a med-full strength. I was surprised by the strong sourdough notes throughout the cigar. Hoping for better considering the price tag.

A sublime, refined cigar; you can tell that the blender was aiming for a Cuban profile, with distinct ‘twang’ that is one of the closest approximations of true Cuban terroir that I’ve experienced – this cigar is similar to some stronger Cuban brands, like Partagas, Bolivar, and Cohiba. Is it an excellent cigar? Absolutely. Is it worth the price? For the exclusivity and experience, yes – but I’ll take a star off because at the pricing Byron sets, it’s a bit high.

A complex cigar blended to intentionally recreate the flavors of the older and bolder brands.
