Foundation Charter Oak Connecticut
The Foundation Charter Oak Connecticut is a mild to medium bodied cigar wrapped in a silky USA Connecticut Shade leaf over a Sumatran binder and Nicaraguan fillers, handcrafted at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua S.A. in Esteli, Nicaragua. Created by Nicholas Melillo, founder and master blender of Foundation Cigar Company, the Charter Oak Connecticut is the gentlest expression in the Charter Oak lineup, delivering creamy bread, sweet almonds, cedar, roasted nuts, white pepper, floral notes, and a warm bakery quality that earned it a 93 rating from Cigar Aficionado. A closed foot wraps the wrapper leaf around the base of the cigar, ensuring the first few puffs deliver pure Connecticut Shade flavor before the full blend engages. Available in Rothschild (4 1/2 x 50), Petit Corona (5 1/4 x 42), Toro (6 x 52), Lonsdale (6 1/4 x 42), and Grande (6 x 60), the Charter Oak Connecticut is one of the best value Connecticut Shade cigars in the premium market, routinely praised for delivering flavor and construction that outperform cigars at two and three times the price.
- USA Connecticut Shade wrapper, a golden, silky leaf grown in the Connecticut River Valley, delivers the creamy, bready, subtly sweet foundation that defines this cigar’s approachable personality.
- Sumatran binder adds a gentle spice and complexity underneath the smooth Connecticut Shade wrapper, creating a layered experience that goes beyond what most mild cigars offer.
- Nicaraguan filler tobaccos bring just enough body, wood, and earth to keep the flavor profile interesting and grounded without pushing the cigar beyond its mild to medium character.
- Closed foot wraps the wrapper leaf around the base, creating a gradual transition into the full blend where the first few puffs deliver pure wrapper flavor before the binder and filler join the profile.
- Mild to medium body with a smooth, refined profile built on bread, cream, almonds, cedar, roasted nuts, white pepper, and floral sweetness that stays approachable from first light to the nub.
- 93 rated by Cigar Aficionado, confirming what everyday smokers already know: this is an exceptional Connecticut Shade cigar that punches well above its weight class.
- Consistent construction with an effortless draw, even burn, generous smoke output, and a neat stacking ash that reflects the quality of the rolling at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez.
Nick Melillo and Foundation Cigar Company
Nicholas Melillo spent over a decade at Drew Estate, where he oversaw tobacco operations in Nicaragua and was instrumental in developing some of the company’s most iconic blends. In May 2014, Melillo left Drew Estate to pursue his own brand. After a year of planning and blend development, he officially founded Foundation Cigar Company in June 2015, headquartered in his home state of Connecticut. Foundation debuted at the IPCPR Trade Show in New Orleans in July 2015 with El Güegüense (The Wise Man), a Nicaraguan cigar that earned immediate critical acclaim and landed on multiple “best of” lists.
Melillo’s connection to Connecticut runs deeper than a mailing address. The Charter Oak name pays direct tribute to a centuries old white oak tree in Hartford, Connecticut, where according to local legend, the colony’s royal charter was hidden in 1687 to protect it from seizure by English governor Sir Edmund Andros. That tree became one of the most enduring symbols of American independence and self governance, and Melillo chose the name to anchor a line of cigars rooted in the heritage of his home state while making premium quality accessible to everyday smokers.
Connecticut Shade tobacco
The Connecticut River Valley has been the epicenter of American shade grown wrapper tobacco since the early 1900s, when growers discovered that cultivating tobacco under cheesecloth tents produced thinner, silkier, more delicate leaves with a golden color and mild, creamy flavor. The microclimate of the valley, with its rich alluvial soil, warm summers, and proximity to the Connecticut River, creates growing conditions that are nearly impossible to replicate anywhere else in the world. USA Connecticut Shade wrappers grown in this region remain the gold standard for mild cigars, and the Charter Oak Connecticut uses this leaf as its defining component.
Connecticut Shade wrapper produces a naturally smooth, creamy smoke with subtle sweetness, light bread and nut flavors, and a refined, elegant character that never overwhelms the palate. On the Charter Oak Connecticut, the Shade wrapper works in concert with the Sumatran binder and Nicaraguan fillers to create a cigar that is mild but not boring, gentle but not flat, and approachable without sacrificing the complexity that keeps experienced smokers interested.
The Charter Oak lineup
| Blend | Wrapper | Body | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charter Oak Connecticut | USA Connecticut Shade | Mild to medium | Cream, bread, almonds, cedar, roasted nuts, white pepper, floral, vanilla, smooth and refined |
| Charter Oak Habano | Ecuadorian Habano | Medium | Peppery spice, earth, cedar, baking spices, cocoa, nuts, espresso, graham cracker, tobacco sweetness |
| Charter Oak Maduro | Connecticut Broadleaf | Medium to full | Dark chocolate, coffee, earth, caramel, red pepper, rich and sweet |
The Connecticut sits as the lightest and most approachable of the three Charter Oak blends. Where the Habano brings peppery spice and earth and the Maduro delivers dark chocolate and bold coffee, the Connecticut offers a softer, creamier experience built on bread, nuts, and floral sweetness. All three share the same Nicaraguan filler core and are produced at the same factory, so the construction quality and value proposition carry across the entire lineup.
Smoking experience
The USA Connecticut Shade wrapper is golden with a silky texture, well pressed veins, and tight seams. The pre light aroma presents cedar, white pepper, and a pungent barnyard quality that hints at more complexity than the mild body would suggest. The closed foot mutes the foot aroma, revealing only cedar and light pepper. The cold draw brings cardboard, cedar, and a touch of white pepper spice.
The closed foot ensures the first few puffs deliver pure wrapper leaf flavor. Sweet, creamy bread arrives immediately, followed by a floral perfume and roasted dry nuts. White pepper tingles on the lips and tongue and carries through the retrohale with surprising presence for a mild cigar. Cedar rounds out the opening with a rich, woody quality, and raisin like sweetness joins on the retrohale, creating a raisin toast effect that sets the tone for the entire smoke. The opening reads as medium rather than mild, with more spice and complexity than most Connecticut Shade cigars deliver in their first inch.
The second third settles into a warm, toasty groove. The creamy bread and roasted nuts remain primary, with the white pepper holding steady at a pleasant tingle rather than building in intensity. Cedar transitions toward a more defined oak character, and a light char joins the wood notes, adding a toasted quality that deepens the profile. The floral sweetness that was prominent in the first third becomes intermittent, appearing in flashes between the bread and nut notes. A gentle bitterness emerges and adds contrast without overtaking the sweeter elements. The smoke is silky, the draw effortless, and the ash stacks neatly in even grey layers.
The final third mirrors the second with remarkable consistency. Creamy bread, roasted nuts, cedar, white pepper, and a warm biscuit quality carry the cigar to its finish without dropping off or losing definition. The bitterness present in the middle portion remains as a balancing element, and the retrohale continues to deliver sweet bread and peppery spice. A touch of almond sweetness threads through the final inch, and the cigar finishes cool, smooth, and satisfying with no harshness or heat buildup. Strength edges from mild to medium by the end, and body sits firmly at medium throughout, making this a Connecticut that delivers more substance than its mild classification implies.
Vitola options
| Vitola | Size | Box Count |
|---|---|---|
| Rothschild | 4 1/2 x 50 | 20 |
| Petit Corona | 5 1/4 x 42 | 20 |
| Toro | 6 x 52 | 20 |
| Lonsdale | 6 1/4 x 42 | 20 |
| Grande | 6 x 60 | 20 |
The Rothschild (4 1/2 x 50) is the most popular size in the lineup, delivering a dense, satisfying smoke with surprising longevity for its compact dimensions. The thicker ring gauge concentrates the filler flavors and provides a richer experience than the thinner Petit Corona or Lonsdale, while the larger Toro and Grande offer extended smoking sessions where the transitions and evolution of the blend have more room to develop.
Pairings
The Charter Oak Connecticut’s mild, creamy, bready profile makes it an ideal morning or afternoon cigar that pairs naturally with coffee, tea, or a light lager. A medium roast coffee with its own nutty and caramel qualities complements the almond and bread notes in the cigar without competing for attention. For tea drinkers, a smooth Earl Grey or chamomile allows the Connecticut Shade sweetness to shine. A crisp pilsner or wheat beer matches the light, clean finish and adds a refreshing contrast to the warm, toasty mid palate flavors.

The Rothschild starts off very mild with a profile that includes nuts, light wood and a bit of pepper. This transitions into something with a bit more earthiness and a touch of leather. Nothing dramatic, but a good, mild cigar when you just want to unwind and zone out and not have to pay a lot of attention to what you’re smoking. The burn is near perfect with generous smoke. The fact that you can get all this in a $6 cigar is amazing.

It’s got all the characteristics of your typical connecticut: mild in strength, smooth, creamy texture, with a bready and nutty flavor profile. If your looking for something light and simple to pair with your morning cup of joe it’ll get the job done but if you’re looking for something more nuanced and with more complexity you’ll probably be disappointed. Regardless, for the price, it’s definitely worth trying.

Far from the best tasting shade cigar out there, but you get way more than you pay for with the charter oaks. The wrapper definitely has some bitterness to it, coupled with some of the spicy earthy notes of the fillers, so if you are hoping for the smooth creaminess of an Atabey or Davidoff, this isn’t the droid you were looking for. If you were expecting a 6 dollar cigar to be Atabey good you might want to change your medication. For the price, this is outstanding. A fine cigar for an every day smoke or to share with friends that you like, but not all that much.

A quality cigar under the $6 price mark is always a solid find. I’m not going to sit here and pretend that this thing is going to be winning awards anytime soon, and CT Shade is not for everyone, but this thing fills a niche purpose.
A good cigar, with mass appeal, at a decent price point. Load up for the boys!

This is a perfect cigar when you don’t have (Rothschild) too much time to enjoy. The flavor is spot on what you expect in a connie and construction is good. Tried this in other sizes and nothing but good smokin.

The Foundation Charter Oak Connecticut Rothschild cigar is an exceptional value-priced smoke that packs a flavorful punch in a small package. From the moment you light up, you’re greeted with a complex and well-balanced flavor profile that’s sure to impress.
The first notes that hit your palate are the saltine cracker and white pepper, which are perfectly balanced with the subtle hints of cedar that follow. The overall taste is creamy and smooth, with a slight sweetness that rounds out the experience.
But what really stands out about this cigar is the size. The Rothschild size is small, but it delivers a big smoke that lasts for a surprisingly long time. This makes it the perfect choice for those on-the-go or for those who prefer a shorter smoke.
The quality of the construction is also noteworthy. The cigar burns evenly and produces a satisfying amount of smoke with each draw. And while the price point may be budget-friendly, the quality of the cigar is anything but cheap.
Overall, the Foundation Charter Oak Connecticut Rothschild is a must-try for anyone looking for a value-priced smoke that doesn’t compromise on flavor or quality. 4-stars!

Absolutely delicious smoke! I love the Rothschild vitola as it gives me about 45-55 min when I don’t have a ton of time to smoke. The flavors are exceptional especially out of a $5-$6 smoke. I get warm dinner roll flavor, with cashews and cream. The draw on this specimen was perfect, draw spot on. I loved the addition of the closed foot to this so you get that blast of flavor right away. These will always be a staple in my rotation. Just an incredible value for these.
