Smoking Experience
The Antaño Gran Reserva impresses from first glance with its dark, inviting hue and solid hand feel. Opening notes deliver awakening pepper intensity that quickly settles to reveal complexity beneath—chocolate covered cherries, raisins, dark coffee, and juicy meatiness emerge alongside earth tones. Expert blending delivers a robust backbone of peppery spice complemented by coffee, leather, and rich caramel undertones that evolve throughout the smoke. The middle section introduces bourbon and oak notes with molasses quality on the finish, while natural tobacco sweetness, bing cherry, and brown sugar develop as the cigar progresses.
True to Joya de Nicaragua’s legendary craftsmanship, the Antaño Gran Reserva boasts excellent combustion, generous aromatic smoke output, and construction that ensures gratifying burn every session. The final third intensifies with earthy depth, black pepper, and lingering leather notes that remind smokers of the blend’s Antaño heritage—powerful yet refined, bold yet approachable. Every draw offers satisfying combination of power and smoothness, making this memorable smoke for both special occasions and evening indulgence.
Understanding Double Ligero
Double ligero refers to using a higher proportion of ligero leaves—the uppermost leaves on tobacco plants that receive maximum sun exposure. This extended sunlight causes plants to produce more oils and thicker, more robust leaves packed with concentrated strength and flavor. By incorporating double ligero into the filler blend, the Gran Reserva delivers amplified body and intensity while maintaining balance through careful aging. The five-year aging process mellows the natural power of these potent leaves, creating refined strength rather than overwhelming force.
Heritage & Legacy
Established in 1968, Joya de Nicaragua holds the distinction as Nicaragua’s oldest premium cigar brand. When Alejandro Martinez-Cuenca acquired the company in 1994, he rebuilt what war had destroyed—the factory had been burned to the ground during civil conflict. Under his leadership, Joya de Nicaragua reclaimed its position as a pillar of Nicaraguan cigar craftsmanship, earning global recognition for quality and consistency. The Antaño Gran Reserva represents this legacy at its finest, combining traditional techniques with innovative aging and blending to create cigars worthy of the brand’s historic reputation.

It’s an ok cigar, but pretty one note. There is a somewhat metallic Finnish to the flavor here, almost like sucking on a penny that I didnt really enjoy. A good amount of strength, medium full, and decently peppery. The construction was fine, nothing to not really there, mostly even burn, draw was ok, and it needed on relight. The flavor was not for me, but it’s a good price for what you get.
