The Gran Reserve 1988 exemplifies Gellis’s philosophy of creating cigars that honor tradition while pushing boundaries. The Corojo ’99 wrapper from Jalapa Valley provides exceptional smoothness and complexity, its oily sheen promising the richness within. Paired with carefully selected Nicaraguan binder and Criollo ’98 filler tobaccos, the blend achieves remarkable harmony between strength and nuance. Each component contributes distinct characteristics, with the Jalapa wrapper lending sweetness and elegance, while the aged filler tobaccos provide depth, complexity, and the signature Aganorsa sweetness that defines premium Nicaraguan tobacco.
The flavor journey begins with notes of cream, vanilla, and toasted walnut, establishing an approachable yet sophisticated foundation. Black pepper emerges delicately on the retrohale without overwhelming the palate. As combustion progresses, dark chocolate bitterness mingles with espresso bean richness, creating a mocha-like combination that satisfies without becoming cloying. Leather undertones add maturity and depth, while occasional floral notes provide unexpected elegance. The final third intensifies these core flavors while maintaining perfect balance, never allowing strength to overshadow the nuanced tobacco expression.
Construction excellence reflects the meticulous standards at Aganorsa Leaf’s Nicaraguan facilities, where traditional techniques meet modern quality control. The draw resistance strikes an ideal balance, delivering generous smoke production without requiring effort. Burn lines remain sharp and even, producing firm white ash that holds confidently. The robusto format, at 5¼ x 50, provides optimal proportions for flavor concentration while maintaining comfortable ergonomics throughout the extended smoking session. Reviews consistently praise the construction quality, though some note occasional burn corrections may be needed depending on storage conditions.

What makes the Serie Gran Reserve 1988 special among Warped releases?
This celebratory blend marking Kyle Gellis’s 30th birthday achieved Cigar Aficionado’s #3 ranking for 2019 with a 95-point score. The 100% Nicaraguan puro showcases Aganorsa Leaf’s finest tobaccos, particularly the prized Corojo ’99 wrapper from Jalapa Valley, creating a profile that balances creamy smoothness with robust complexity rarely achieved in single-origin blends.
How does this compare to other Warped offerings?
The GR88 delivers fuller body and greater intensity than Maestro del Tiempo while maintaining more refinement than La Colmena. Its creamy, Cuban-style profile with dark chocolate and espresso notes positions it between Warped’s lighter offerings and their boldest expressions, making it ideal for those seeking complexity without overwhelming strength.
What flavors dominate throughout the smoking experience?
Opening with cream, vanilla, and toasted walnut, the profile evolves through dark chocolate and espresso bean richness in the middle third. Leather undertones provide depth while black pepper adds measured spice. The final third concentrates these flavors with increased intensity while maintaining the signature Aganorsa sweetness throughout.
Is the construction consistent with its premium rating?
Most smokers report excellent construction with sharp burn lines, firm ash, and ideal draw resistance. Some reviews mention occasional burn corrections may be needed, particularly if stored above 65% humidity. The robusto format generally performs reliably, delivering consistent flavor and smoke production throughout the 60-90 minute experience.
Why was 1988 chosen for this special release?
Kyle Gellis was born in 1988, making this release a celebration of his 30th birthday when it debuted in 2018. The blend represents both personal milestone and professional achievement, showcasing the blending expertise he developed since founding Warped at age 20 while still in college.
What makes the Jalapa Valley Corojo ’99 wrapper distinctive?
Jalapa Valley’s unique microclimate produces Corojo ’99 with exceptional smoothness and natural sweetness. The lower priming leaves used for this wrapper undergo extended fermentation, resulting in reduced nicotine strength while maintaining rich flavor, creating the creamy character that defines this celebrated blend.
How should I properly enjoy this award-winning cigar?
Take time with the lighting process to fully toast the foot before drawing. Smoke slowly to appreciate the nuanced transitions, allowing 60-90 minutes for the full experience. Pair with medium-roast coffee to complement the chocolate and espresso notes, or aged rum to enhance the natural sweetness.
Is this suitable for special occasions or regular rotation?
While created as a celebratory release, the GR88 has transitioned to regular production due to popularity. Its balanced profile and reasonable format make it suitable for regular enjoyment, though the premium quality and award-winning status certainly merit special occasion consideration.

I like this cigar a lot. I suggest you should get some before I do. Currently I’m resting them in my humidor and will have to smoke another one soon.

Solid offering from Warped. Flavor wise it’s smooth and creamy, paired great with my latte. It’s not a very complex stick so don’t expect many transitions. No construction issues and draw was great. At the Oxford price I’d smoke it again.

Medium bodied, well rolled, smooth and creamy. This is a very nice “go to” smoke because of its size and lack of complexity. What it lacks in complexity it makes up for with a wonderful and reliable flavour profile.

Unfortunately, I have to say that this is one of my least favorite from this family line. I myself also had some construction issues with the wrap of the leaf. I had some sort of weird line or stem burns that went through the cigar. I always have mixed feelings about the Warped line, and this is one of the family members that knocks points off overall for the brand. The flavor is pretty good, approachable. Vanilla, thatch, dried grass, walnut shell are some of the flavor profiles you come across when you’re smoking this. Then there is some kind of flat and flabby tones in the smoke. About halfway through, you feel like you have a really good wrap, but the filling is a slightly cheaper or lesser quakity filling. Maybe over/under matured? But there are much more affordable options and taste options in the Warped family. The cigar on its own is really not that pricey, and do not let my review dissuade you from trying it if you are a fan of the Warped line. But this is kind of like that bad cousin that doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the line.

Warped Serie Gran Reserve 1988, Wonky burn. The biggest disappointment was having to relight before each draw of the cigar. I could not enjoy the cigar. I have had this cigar in the past and really enjoyed it.

Incredible profile and complex flavors. Great transitions. Only thing that impacted the experience was the burn. Found I had an uneven burn and had to relight frequently. Even after resting the cigars for a month at 65rh.

Four stars, if only because compared to the exquisite La Colmena, this cigar just isn’t quite as complex. Construction is great, it has a vaguely ‘Cuban’ creaminess, but a fairly standard (if very well-balanced) palate of leather, nuts, and quality tobacco. It’s a very good cigar – it’s just not all that exciting, so to speak.

This is my least favorite release from Warped. Not saying it’s terrible, but mine had some construction issue and the flavor was bitter. I’ll have to revisit it at a later time. For now, neutral 3 star.

As with most things Warped I love this stick. Smooth and easy to smoke and a great price to match. Pairs great with coffee with fantastic draw. Construction and burn are quality, the flavor is delicious. I will be keeping these in stock.

I’m fairly new to cigar smoking. I ordered a 5-pack of these and am enjoying them a lot. The burn is slow and it pulls nicely. I enjoyed the taste of sweet leather, creaminess, spice, and nuts. I will be ordering more to have in my collection.
