Even before the Spring Edition of Cigar Journal had published its blind tasting results, word had begun to circulate about a strong showing from the Esteban Carreras Soga de Oro Maduro Toro. The cigar had impressed the magazine’s global tasting panel, earning a notable 93 points and stirring early interest among those who caught wind of the rating.
The timing hardly have been better for the cigar’s Canadian debut.
In early March, the Soga de Oro (available in Maduro & Sumatra) arrived in the market via distributor Tabac Arsenal with a launch event at The Smokin’ Cigar in Toronto, where more than 80 attendees gathered to sample the newly praised release.
The event also marked the beginning of a Canadian tour for Christopher Mey, global sales director for Esteban Carreras. Over the next week and a half, Mey is scheduled to visit tobacconists across Ontario and Quebec, hosting events along a route that stretches from London to Montreal.
“I got word that the Soga Maduro received a 93 while I was having dinner in Naples [Florida] the day before I flew up to Toronto,” Mey said. “Needless to say, the timing couldn’t have been better.”
Judging by the turnout in Toronto, the cigar’s buzz appears to be translating into strong curiosity at the retail level.
