Arturo Fuente 858 Natural
The Arturo Fuente 858 Natural represents the accessible face of the Fuente portfolio, a cigar that has earned its place as a modern classic through decades of consistent quality and approachable flavor. Rolled at Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic, this lonsdale showcases the family’s skill with African Cameroon wrapper tobacco paired with aged Dominican fillers. The 858 designation refers to the traditional packaging format of 8 rows, 5 cigars per row, and 8 additional cigars on top, totaling 25 cigars per cabinet. This cigar delivers reliable performance at a value that makes it an ideal daily smoke for enthusiasts who refuse to compromise on construction quality.

The Construction and Blend
The 858 Natural measures 6 inches with a 47 ring gauge, a refined lonsdale format that has fallen somewhat out of favor in an era dominated by larger ring gauges. This traditional size allows the Cameroon wrapper to exert meaningful influence over the flavor profile while maintaining enough filler tobacco to provide body and complexity. The wrapper itself shows a smooth, slightly oily surface with minimal veining, displaying the light tan to golden brown color characteristic of quality Cameroon leaf.
Beneath the wrapper lies a straightforward blend of Dominican tobaccos serving as both binder and filler. These leaves undergo careful aging to eliminate harshness and develop the smooth, refined character the Fuente family demands. The construction remains a hallmark of this cigar, with firm, consistent density from head to foot and clean triple cap application that resists unraveling during cutting and smoking.
Flavor Profile
The 858 Natural opens with mild cedar and cream notes, establishing a foundation that remains present throughout the smoking experience. The Cameroon wrapper contributes natural sweetness reminiscent of light honey or molasses, balanced by subtle baking spices including cinnamon and nutmeg. As the cigar progresses, toasted nuts emerge, particularly cashew and walnut characteristics that complement the cedar base.
The middle section introduces touches of leather and oak, adding depth without overwhelming the palate. Some smokers detect hints of grass or hay, earthy notes that reinforce the tobacco’s natural character. The pepper presence remains minimal, appearing primarily on the retrohale as white pepper rather than the aggressive black pepper found in fuller cigars. The final third maintains consistency, with slightly intensified wood notes and a clean finish free from bitterness or tar buildup.
Smoking Experience
The 858 Natural typically provides 40 to 50 minutes of smoking time, making it suitable for morning coffee pairings or quick afternoon breaks. The draw presents ideal resistance, producing ample smoke volume with moderate pull. The burn line tracks evenly with minimal attention required, and the ash holds firm in light gray segments up to an inch before releasing. Cold draw reveals subtle cedar and sweet hay notes that preview the smoking experience accurately.
Strength sits comfortably in the mild to medium range, never threatening to overwhelm even novice smokers. Body remains medium throughout, providing enough substance to satisfy without demanding full attention. The flavor intensity registers as medium, delivering distinct taste without the bold, in-your-face characteristics of stronger blends. This balanced approach makes the 858 Natural remarkably versatile, performing well from morning through mid-afternoon without palate fatigue.
Value and Market Position
Within the Arturo Fuente portfolio, the 858 Natural occupies the entry point for Cameroon-wrapped cigars. It sits below the Hemingway series in both complexity and pricing, while sharing similar construction quality and tobacco sourcing. Many longtime Fuente enthusiasts keep boxes of 858 Natural on hand as daily smokers, reserving Don Carlos or Hemingway cigars for special occasions. The consistent availability, unlike allocation-challenged lines such as Opus X, adds to the appeal for smokers who value reliability.
The cigar earned a 93-point rating from Cigar Aficionado, with reviewers praising its notes of baking spices, molasses, and walnuts. This recognition validates the 858 Natural’s position as a benchmark for quality in the value-priced premium category. Smokers frequently describe it as a “workhorse” cigar, dependable rather than exciting, consistent rather than complex. For those seeking flavor adventures and dramatic transitions, the 858 Natural may disappoint. For those valuing reliability, quality construction, and fair pricing, it delivers exactly what it promises.

Who should smoke the 858 Natural?
The 858 Natural suits smokers seeking reliable quality without premium pricing. Beginners find this an excellent introduction to Cameroon wrapper cigars and the Arturo Fuente brand. Experienced enthusiasts appreciate it as a daily smoke that won’t strain the budget or overpower the palate during morning and midday sessions. Those transitioning from mild Connecticut shade cigars to slightly more robust profiles will find this an ideal stepping stone.
What makes the 858 Natural special?
The 858 Natural’s strength lies in consistency rather than complexity. It represents Arturo Fuente’s ability to deliver their signature construction quality across all price points, not just premium lines. The traditional lonsdale format appeals to smokers who value elegance over trend-chasing ring gauge inflation. Its approachable flavor profile makes it a versatile choice that performs well in various settings without demanding specific timing or pairing considerations.
How does the 858 Natural compare to other Fuente cigars?
The 858 Natural sits at the entry level of Fuente’s Cameroon-wrapped offerings. It delivers milder flavor and less complexity than the Hemingway series, which uses similar Cameroon wrapper over more refined filler blends. Compared to the Don Carlos, the 858 Natural shows less depth, shorter finish, and simpler flavor progression. The Chateau Fuente Natural offers similar characteristics at comparable pricing. The 858 Natural provides an honest smoking experience without pretense, ideal for those who appreciate quality construction over flavor fireworks.
What pairs well with an 858 Natural?
Morning coffee makes an ideal pairing, with medium roast varieties complementing the cigar’s mild sweetness and cedar notes. Light breakfast foods including pastries, toast with honey, or oatmeal work well. For beverages, consider Earl Grey tea, which echoes the light spice characteristics, or a blonde ale that won’t overpower the delicate flavors. Avoid bold spirits or heavy meals that will dominate the 858 Natural’s subtle profile.
How should you store 858 Natural cigars?
Maintain the 858 Natural at 65 to 68 percent humidity for optimal performance. The thinner ring gauge makes these cigars more sensitive to humidity fluctuations than larger formats. Excessive humidity above 70 percent can cause draw issues and muted flavors, while dryness below 62 percent leads to harsh, hot smoke. These cigars benefit from rest after shipping, with flavor settling and improving after two weeks in stable storage conditions.
Why choose the 858 Natural over other value cigars?
The 858 Natural provides Arturo Fuente construction quality at accessible pricing, a combination few competitors match. The Cameroon wrapper represents a step up from basic Connecticut shade cigars common in this price range, offering more character and complexity. Brand reputation ensures consistent quality control, reducing the batch variation that plagues some value-priced offerings. For smokers who want reliable daily cigars without compromise on construction, the 858 Natural delivers exceptional value.
Does the 858 Natural age well?
The 858 Natural benefits from moderate aging of 6 months to 2 years in proper storage conditions. Extended rest mellows any remaining edge in the tobacco, enhancing the natural sweetness and smoothing the finish. The cedar notes become more pronounced while maintaining balance with the wrapper’s nutty characteristics. Beyond 2 years, improvements become marginal, as this blend lacks the intensity and tobacco depth that rewards extended aging in fuller cigars.
What is the history of the 858 format?
The 858 packaging format dates to traditional Cuban cigar cabinet arrangements, where cigars were stacked in specific patterns to maximize cabinet space while protecting the delicate wrapper leaves. The 8-5-8 configuration places 8 cigars in the bottom row, 5 in the middle, and 8 on top, totaling 25 cigars presented in an attractive, easy-to-access format. Arturo Fuente adopted this classic presentation for their Gran Reserva line, honoring cigar traditions while showcasing their products in elegant cedar cabinets.

I can’t give this 5 stars just because it’s not a top-tier blend. That being said, dollar for dollar this is one of the best smokes out there. Good construction and consistent flavors. Good to mix some of these in as a budget smoke

Classic, simple, not too expensive and overall just a good smoke. Tasting notes of cedar, white pepper, almond, hints of chocolate and coffee at the finish. I always enjoy these 858s with a coffee in the morning.

Another very good cigar from Arturo Fuente. The burn and overall quality was first rate. The profile was fairly mild with wood, cedar and spices with a little pepper to keep things interesting. This was constant throughout the smoke without much transition. Excellent value for the price.

This is a classic cigar and for good reason. Great price and it’s just a consistent workhorse. That said I find them a bit boring and one note. Earthy, woody, a little pepper and not much else.

This is the quintessential everyday fuente cigar. At this price per stick, there is no better bang for your buck offerings. It also gets better and better with aging!

I enjoy most natural wrappers on cigars and this was no different. This cigar came in at medium strength and medium body. Got some classic earthy, grass notes. Some creaminess with some cinnamon in the 2nd third. It had that classic Fuente flavor of well aged tobacco. Construction on the stick was spot on. The flavors were solid but nothing that blew me away. Not much for transitions.

This well-balanced medium smoke has sweet woody notes and a little pepper and nuttiness to it. I really enjoy the Cameroon wrapper on the Hemingway Short Story. The 858 is a step below the short story.
