Davidoff Winston Churchill Petit Panetela
The Davidoff Winston Churchill Petit Panetela is a 4 x 38 handmade small format cigar from “The Original Series,” delivering the full complexity and multi origin character of the Winston Churchill line in a compact, 20 to 25 minute smoke. Blended by Davidoff’s master blenders to reflect the multifaceted personality of Sir Winston Churchill himself, this petit panetela uses tobaccos from four countries, including a specially selected 15 year old Dominican San Vicente leaf, to create a medium bodied cigar with earthy depth, floral aromatics, spice, and a sweet cedar finish that rivals many full size cigars in flavor development and satisfaction.
- Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with a smooth, refined appearance and a warm, aromatic quality that sets the tone for a layered smoking experience.
- Peruvian binder adds structure and a subtle sweetness that bridges the wrapper and filler components.
- Dominican Republic and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos, including Olor, Piloto, San Vicente, Condega, and Esteli, blended from four countries of origin to create a complex, evolving profile.
- Includes a specially selected 15 year old Dominican San Vicente tobacco leaf that adds aged depth and integration to the blend.
- Measures 4 inches by 38 ring gauge in a true petit panetela format, fully handmade with the same construction standards as every full size Davidoff cigar.
- Presented in a sleek tin of 5, designed for portability and on the go enjoyment without sacrificing premium quality.
- Medium bodied with medium nicotine intensity, accessible enough for morning or midday smoking while carrying genuine complexity.
Winston Churchill and cigars
Sir Winston Churchill’s relationship with cigars was inseparable from his public identity. He picked up his first cigar in Cuba during their final war for independence, and from that moment the cigar became a symbol of his personal and political independence. He smoked between eight and ten cigars a day throughout his adult life, maintained a dedicated cigar room with hundreds of premiums organized by size, wrapper, brand, and age, and refused to put his cigar out even on his first high altitude flight during World War II, requesting a modified oxygen mask with a hole just right for smoking. On June 10, 1944, four days after D Day, Churchill landed in France, lit his cigar, and walked ashore into liberated Europe. As his great grandson Randolph Churchill described, “We could see the magic in his eyes. Europe’s been liberated, he is happy and he has a cigar.”
Davidoff introduced the Winston Churchill line in December 2007, created in conjunction with the Churchill family. It became the first non Davidoff branded cigar to be rolled in the Davidoff factory proper in the Dominican Republic, under the supervision of master blender Hendrik Kelner and later Eladio Diaz. The line was revitalized and expanded in 2014 with input from Randolph Churchill, and the Petit Panetela was added as a small format option that distills the Original Series’ character into a cigar that fits Churchill’s philosophy: “My tastes are simple: I am easily satisfied with the best.”
The Original Series blend
The Winston Churchill Original Series, sometimes called the “White Label” for its distinctive white bands, is unique within the Davidoff portfolio because the blend varies slightly depending on the vitola. The Petit Panetela draws from a pool of Dominican (Olor, Piloto, San Vicente) and Nicaraguan (Condega, Esteli) filler tobaccos under a Peruvian binder and Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. The use of a 15 year old Dominican San Vicente leaf in the blend is a distinctive touch that adds aged, integrated depth from the first puff, eliminating the young, raw edges that can affect small format cigars from lesser makers.
The multi origin approach is deliberate. Davidoff’s master blenders designed the Original Series to reflect Churchill’s own appetite for experiencing the wider world, pulling flavors from four tobacco growing regions to create a blend where no single origin dominates. Nicaraguan tobaccos contribute earthiness and spice, Dominican tobaccos provide cream and sweetness, the Peruvian binder adds structure, and the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper delivers aromatic warmth and a polished visual presentation. In the Petit Panetela format, this blend reads as more concentrated and intense than the larger vitolas, with the smaller ring gauge putting the wrapper and binder in a more prominent flavor position.
Smoking experience
The first puffs arrive with a pronounced earthiness, black pepper, and a distinctive licorice note that immediately signals complexity beyond what most small format cigars deliver. Floral and herbal aromas fill the air around the cigar, creating a room note that is distinctly aromatic and inviting. The draw is open and effortless, the burn starts straight, and smoke production is generous for a cigar this size.
By the middle of the cigar, the profile mellows and broadens. Sweet cedar moves to the front, the pepper settles into a warm background spice, and cream and dark coffee notes emerge alongside the continuing earthy base. The floral quality persists through the aroma, and a leathery, roasted quality adds savory depth. The transition from the spicy, assertive opening to the sweeter, more rounded midsection is one of the most impressive aspects of the Petit Panetela, delivering the kind of flavor evolution that typically requires a much longer cigar to achieve.
The final portion deepens the woody, cedar driven character while maintaining balance. Roasted oakwood, leather, and a lingering sweetness carry the cigar to its finish, which stays clean and refined without turning bitter or hot. Total smoking time runs 20 to 25 minutes, making this a cigar that fits naturally into a coffee break, a pre dinner moment, or any window where you want genuine Davidoff quality without committing to an hour or more. Construction is flawless throughout, with a compact ash, perfectly even burn, and the kind of seamless draw that Davidoff’s factory reputation demands.
Pairing suggestions
The sweet cedar and earthy character of the Petit Panetela pairs naturally with single malt Scotch whiskies, especially those with honeyed, sherried profiles like Glenmorangie or Macallan. A cup of black coffee or espresso accentuates the roasted, dark coffee notes in the blend, making it an excellent morning or after lunch cigar. For spirits, a smooth aged rum or a lighter bourbon with vanilla and caramel notes complement the cigar’s sweetness without overwhelming its delicate floral and herbal aromatics.

A 15 year old Dominican San Vicente leaf adds aged integration from the first puff.
What are the main flavor notes?
Earth and black pepper lead the opening, followed by licorice, floral and herbal aromatics, sweet cedar, cream, dark coffee, roasted oakwood, and leather through the middle and finish.
Is this cigar suitable for newer smokers?
Yes. Its medium body and medium strength make it accessible for all experience levels, while the compact format and short smoking time offer a low commitment introduction to Davidoff quality and the Winston Churchill line.

For Davidoff aficionados, the Winston Churchill line is a special one – most are (for better or worse) fairly large, however. While other small Davidoff are quality (Primeros Classic and Maduro, Signature 1000), the Winston Churchill Petit Panatela is the only small Davidoff that has some real body and moderate strength behind it. In many ways, it’s the ideal morning cigar – at least for those who have to get to work at a reasonable hour! You can get through this in as little as fifteen minutes or enjoy it for a bout half an hour (without actively trying to prolong it) as unlike the Belicoso version, this one is indeed long-filler. Dark roast coffee, a bit of something that might be grapefruit (basically a pleasant acidity), and rich tobacco flavour. As it is relatively short, and relatively narrow, take care not to haul away on this too quickly or the nuances get lost and all you really taste is tobacco (which is quality, but you’re missing out at that point). Take a point from Winston and enjoy this leisurely with breakfast!

Love these little short smokes. Big citrus flavors and they burn so well.

Great for short smokes but also to pair with your morning coffee or espresso! The strength and flavor profile on these are fantastic – smooth and just the right tone to kick off the day. I typically sneak in a tiny Boveda pack inside the tin to just help with the levels, but these will be smoked so quickly it might not make a difference lol.
