Greg Pease started blending pipe tobacco during his college years at Drucquer & Sons in Berkeley, California. He spent so much time at the shop that the owner finally told him he spent too much time there for someone who wasn’t working and put him to tasks: restoring pipes, blending house tobaccos, tinning, labeling. That apprenticeship gave Pease a foundational understanding of tobacco that he spent the next three decades refining. He created house blends for the shop (most notably “Sublime Porte”) and kept experimenting with his own mixtures on the side.
In 1998, while on temporary disability for carpal tunnel syndrome from his career as a computer scientist, Pease looked at the list of things his doctor told him he wasn’t allowed to do. Blending tobacco wasn’t on there. He started a company. By early 2000, G.L. Pease Tobacco was born, and it has grown into one of the most respected small batch tobacco companies in the world. Greg’s blends are manufactured by C&D (Cornell & Diehl) in the United States. The Fog City Selection, which includes Union Square, is named for San Francisco, Pease’s home city, and each blend in the collection takes its name from a San Francisco neighborhood or landmark.

Union Square is part of G.L. Pease’s Fog City Selection, a collection of blends inspired by San Francisco. Preparing the flakes
Union Square’s pressed flake format offers three preparation methods.
