Strength in Unity: Why Collaboration is Essential for the Premium Cigar Industry

In today’s complex political environment, the premium cigar industry faces a wide range of legislative and policy challenges at both the state and federal levels. Addressing these issues effectively requires a unified approach that brings together all parts of the industry with a shared commitment to protecting its future.

That is why collaboration amongst Cigar Rights of America (CRA), the Premium Cigar Association (PCA), the National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO), and the Cigar Association of America (CAA) is more important than ever. By aligning on core policy objectives and working together where possible, we are able to present a stronger, more consistent voice to policymakers and regulators.

Recent examples of cooperation underscore the strength of this unified approach. For instance, routinely CRA, PCA, and CAA collaborate with Congressman Dan Meuser, Chairman of the Congressional Cigar Caucus, to host events that educate lawmakers on the unique nature of premium cigars and help shape more informed, balanced policies affecting the industry as a whole.

At the state level, CRA, PCA, and NATO are working together to oppose Nicotine-Free Generation proposals in Massachusetts. These proposals would prohibit the sale of tobacco products, including premium cigars, to anyone born after a certain date. By combining efforts, these organizations are better positioned to educate lawmakers, push back against overreaching regulation, and defend the interests of small businesses and adult consumers. Here is a recent op-ed by a member of the working group on the topic.

Looking ahead, CRA, PCA, and CAA will co-host an event at the 2025 National Conference of State Legislators in Boston. The event will provide an opportunity for lawmakers from across the country to learn more about the cultural, economic, and regulatory uniqueness of premium cigars. It will also serve as a platform to highlight the need for thoughtful, targeted legislation that protects the industry from being lumped into broader tobacco control measures that do not fit its profile.

These examples make it clear that collaboration is not just beneficial but essential. By standing together, the industry can more effectively promote sound policy, protect small businesses, and preserve the premium cigar tradition for future generations.
