On June 17th, Cigar Rights of America (CRA) met with María Isabel Castillo, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the United States, in a meeting aimed at reinforcing the shared economic and cultural interests surrounding premium cigars.
The meeting, held at the Dominican Embassy in Washington, underscored CRA’s commitment to working with key international partners in advancing the interests of premium cigar manufacturers, retailers, and consumers. .
Ambassador Castillo and CRA representatives discussed the long-standing relationship between the U.S. premium cigar industry and the Dominican Republic, one of the world’s leading producers of handmade cigars. Topics included the importance of maintaining fair and distinct regulatory treatment for premium cigars, the impact of international trade policy on the sector, and opportunities to celebrate the artisanal heritage of Dominican-made cigars.
“Collaboration with our country partners is essential to preserving the future of premium cigars,” said Mike Copperman, Executive Director of Cigar Rights of America. “The Dominican Republic is not only a vital trade partner, but also a global leader that defines our industry.”
The meeting marks CRA’s continued efforts to engage directly with diplomatic and trade officials from cigar-producing nations. As federal agencies and lawmakers debate the future of tobacco policy, CRA is working to ensure the perspectives of international partners are part of the conversation.
Ambassador Castillo, who assumed her post earlier this year, expressed her support for premium cigars and their contribution to the Dominican Republic’s economy and global cultural identity.
