Tasting Notes
The Chapter One delivers a complex flavor profile that evolves throughout the smoking experience. Initial notes of earth and pepper gradually develop into a rich tapestry of milk chocolate, coffee, and spice. As the cigar progresses, expect to encounter creamy textures complemented by subtle hints of caramel, toffee, and a touch of fruitiness in the final third. The Brazilian wrapper contributes a distinctive terroir that sets this blend apart from other La Flor Dominicana offerings.
Construction & Design
This cigar features La Flor Dominicana’s patented Chisel format – a wedge-shaped cap that resembles the blade of a chisel tool. The Chapter One represents an evolution of this iconic shape, as Antonio Gomez created a larger, flatter version of his father’s original design. The box-pressed format enhances the draw while the high-priming Brazilian wrapper provides a dark, oily appearance with minimal veining.
The Story Behind Chapter One
Antonio Gomez began this project by experimenting with box-pressing one of the company’s Double Ligero Maduro Chisels out of curiosity. The wrapper used is from the same tobacco as the Air Bender Maduro but taken from a higher priming for additional strength and darker color. Released in 2013 with a production of 10,000 boxes (100,000 total cigars), the Chapter One marked the beginning of Antonio’s blending career and a new chapter for La Flor Dominicana.
Smoking Experience
The unique chisel format acts as a flavor funnel, intensifying the smoking experience by directing smoke through a smaller aperture. For optimal enjoyment, Litto Gomez recommends pinching the chisel rather than cutting the cap, as this method preserves the intended flavor profile. The cigar offers excellent balance between strength and body, with a long, satisfying finish that showcases the quality of its premium tobaccos.

It is unexpectedly smooth after lighting, with a very thick, rich, and strong bean aroma. The main line is nutty and bean aroma, with a slight woody aroma, a slightly smooth feeling of chocolate, average strength, medium to high intensity, average combustion, and ok structure. The roll is very tight, the inhalation resistance is just right, and it feels very powerful when held in the hand. The chisel narrowing at the end of the tail makes good use of the smoke concentration property, and a lot of impurities are covered under the blessing of the powerful main line.

I go back and for with this and the Capitulo II, they’re both excellent. This one is a little more aggressive in term of nicotine content, and equally full in body and flavor. Sometimes I find Brazilian wrapper to be unappealing, but when they’re done right they can really elevate a cigar, which is the case with this. I love that you get so much cigar out of this for a price that is more than reasonable.
