The Cigar Smoking World Championship qualifier in Spain last year was a close call, not just between two smokers, but three. Zaquiel Mayorga’s winning time wasn’t even two minutes better than Thorsten Ebers’ in the third place. This year, the tables turned, and quite dramatically as well.
The contest was held in Valencia, set against the picturesque backdrop of a beautiful hacienda. Some of Spain’s finest slow smokers gathered and the competition was fierce from the very beginning. Mayorga was eager to defend his title, but it just wasn’t his year. Ebers, on the other hand, arrived well-prepared, highly trained and determined to claim his first title as the Spanish champion.
“As the competition progressed, it became clear that Ebers had an edge,” CSWC founder Marko Bilic says. “His technique and calm demeanor allowed him to smoke at an exceptionally slow pace, gradually building an insurmountable lead.”
At 2 hours and 34 minutes, Ebers not only got his “revenge”, he also outperformed his fellow competitors by more than an hour and beat his own time from 2023 by 42 minutes. Cesar Martinez Casas came in second at 1 hour and 29 minutes and Mayorga claimed third place at 1 hour and 25 minutes.
“The day belonged to Thorsten Ebers,” Bilic concludes. “His impressive performance has positioned him as a formidable competitor on the global arena, and his victory is a testament to the evolving competitive spirit within the CSWC community. With his surprisingly high time and strategic approach, Ebers has indeed marked himself as a new name to watch in the world of competitive slow smoking.”
